\u201cProgressives\u2019 responses to the 2016 election are indistinguishable from their reactions to the 2020 election,\u201d notes William Voegeli at City Journal<\/a>. This, even though President Trump won the first and lost the second. The Nation\u2019s Joan Walsh, to take just one example, says \u201cAmerica\u2019s failure to repudiate Donald Trump in a landslide has left her \u2018ashamed of our country.\u2019 \u201d Yet lefties \u201cmight think hard about the possibility that Trump and Republicans in general<\/a> surpass electoral expectations because the alternative to the GOP\u201d is \u201cprogressivism.\u201d And shockingly, \u201cmany voters do not respond gratefully to being execrated as bigots, fascists and idiots.\u201d The left\u2019s \u201caversion to introspection\u201d has its bright side, however: Those \u201cwho lack the capacity to ponder their mistakes never get around to correcting them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Conservative: GOP Will Win Georgia Runoffs<\/strong><\/p>\n

Control of the Senate will come down to a pair of Georgia runoff elections, and while Democrats \u201cinsist they will win both seats,\u201d the most likely scenario \u201cis not on their side,\u201d predicts National Review\u2019s John Fund<\/a>. For nearly 30 years, Republicans have won every statewide runoff vote in Georgia, which remains a very conservative place, notwithstanding Joe Biden\u2019s ballot-box gains there last week. The state\u2019s Republicans will use the left\u2019s \u201cradical agenda\u201d to get voters motivated. \u201cGeorgia voters may have acted to change the occupant of the White House, but it\u2019s doubtful they wish to \u2018change America,\u2019 \u201d as Chuck Schumer has vowed to do. Instead, \u201cthe incoming Biden administration will take office with no mandate and seeing its candidates repudiated in Georgia just before the president takes office on Jan. 20.\u201d<\/p>\n

Neocon: The Porridge of the United States<\/strong><\/p>\n

Commentary\u2019s John Podhoretz compares<\/a> Joe Biden, the app<\/a>arent winner of last week\u2019s election, to political \u201cporridge\u201d: \u201cHe\u2019s not too hot (Trump). He\u2019s not too cold (AOC). But even if he\u2019s just right, he\u2019s still porridge \u2014 dull and flavorless, but for those who voted for him, hopefully filling.\u201d Paradoxically, however, that\u2019s precisely \u201cwhy he won.\u201d He emerged the winner of his own party\u2019s primaries by steering clear of the lunacies of the far-left, and he won the presidency \u201cby simply not being Donald Trump.\u201d And he may yet be a successful president, because \u201cwith every breath he takes, he will be as promised \u2014 Not Donald Trump.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Talking Points Memo, John Judis looks at<\/a> why Democrats fell short of the electoral gains they expected. Dems in districts that backed President Trump in 2016 \u201cwere hampered by the national party\u2019s identification with demands to \u2018defund the police\u2019 (which most Americans outside of a few zip codes saw as a threat to public safety),\u201d as well as Nancy Pelosi\u2019s failure on a stimulus bill, Joe \u201cBiden\u2019s threat to \u2018shut down\u2019 the economy in the face of the pandemic (which frightened Americans who are worried about losing or have already lost their jobs), the party\u2019s support for a Green New Deal and opposition to fracking and the specter of social<\/a>ism.\u201d And while health care and climate change remain key winners for Democrats in other areas, both side \u201chave to recognize that the country is divided on these questions and is going to remain so.\u201d Surprise at Trump\u2019s success with Hispanics, meanwhile, mainly reflects a failure to understand \u201cthe complexity of the Hispanic vote.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cStolen\u201d Election watch: Two Can Play That Game<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

Democrats are raging at President Trump\u2019s claims of a stolen election \u2014 a clear case of the pot calling the kettle black, snarks the Washington Examiner\u2019s Byron York<\/a>, since \u201cthey said the same thing four years ago after the 2016 election.\u201d And Democrats\u2019 sour grapes didn\u2019t last just a few weeks. \u201cDemocrats pressed the cheating accusation to extraordinary lengths, month after month, and year after year, inflicting as much damage on Trump\u2019s presidency as they possibly could. . . . Democrats made a false accusation of cheating part of their political strategy. They are in a poor position to complain about it now.\u201d<\/p>\n
