I&#8217;m talking about the <em>truly<\/em> terror-inducing \u2014 the type of movies you wake in the dead of night thinking about, and which stay with you for a long, long time after the credits have rolled. The horribly twitchy, sleep-with-the-lights-on-and-avoid-all-mirrors kind of movies.<\/p>\n<p>Streaming platform Shudder has a lot to offer in this regard.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve combed through the archives of the service (which is chock-full of horror, sci-fi and thrillers of all kinds) to track down the most terrifying films we could \u2014 from jumpy classics like <em>Insidious<\/em> to Demian Rugna&#8217;s aptly named <em>Terrified. <\/em>If you&#8217;re unable to deal with jump-scares, these are not for you.<\/p>\n<p>Cushions to hide behind at the ready&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Satans_Slaves\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/zdcs.link\/n8Pb3\" data-module=\"body\" data-element=\"body\" data-item=\"offer\"><em>Satan&#8217;s Slaves<\/em><\/a><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<div class=\"youtube-wrapper\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Satan&#039;s Slaves - Official Trailer [HD] | A Shudder Original\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mhc0d6kYmQ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s it about?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After the strange death of their mother, a family begins to suspect that her presence may not have entirely left the house.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why&#8217;s it so scary?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Indonesian director Joko Anwar knows how to make a creepy film. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>arent during the opening scenes in <em>Satan&#8217;s Slaves<\/em>, when Rini (Tara Basro) makes a grim discovery in her mother&#8217;s bedroom, and it only gets clearer from there on out. Brandon Christensen&#8217;s film very effectively plays on fears of motherhood and mental health, bringing together pretty much every worst nightmare scenario imaginable for a new parent.<\/p>\n<p>Like Christensen&#8217;s other film on this list (see <em>Z<\/em>, further down), <em>Still\/Born<\/em> thrives on its jump-scares \u2014 and there are plenty of those to be had, When Leigh Whannell and James Wan&#8217;s nightmare hit cinema screens back in 2010, people couldn&#8217;t stop talking about just how damn scary the thing was. A decade later and it still gets spoken about, even <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/travisbean\/2020\/10\/17\/what-is-the-scariest-movie-ever-well-science-now-has-an-answer-to-that-question\/#4340463956a2\">coming second in a recent experiment<\/a> that tracked viewers&#8217; heart rates during horror films.<\/p>\n<p>So is the reputation justified? Well, yes. <em>Insidious<\/em> is one of those films that never allows you to relax, utilising jump-scares so effectively \u2014 and often unexpectedly \u2014 that you feel on edge for its entire one-hour, 43-minute runtime. The premise of the story, its Zoom setting, and the very natural dialogue all conspire to make <em>Host<\/em> feel horribly realistic. Brandon Christensen&#8217;s <em>Z<\/em> takes this concept and gives it a fresh twist, putting us in the shoes of Beth (Keegan Connor Tracy) as she grows increasingly disturbed by her son&#8217;s behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>The thing that makes <em>Z<\/em> so unnerving isn&#8217;t so much the creepy child aspect as it is the unknowable monster \u2014 the lingering idea of &#8220;Z,&#8221; this unseen creature that dominates every scene with its absence.
