\/>\n          <\/span><br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>       The initial stage of the COVID-19 pandemic coincided with a \u201cdramatic\u201d decline in preventive and elective health-care use, according to a recent analysis of millions of insurance claims. The resulting rise in telemedicine use, meanwhile, didn\u2019t totally make up for the reduced in-person visits \u2014 and saw disparities along income, racial and ethnic lines.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       For example, use of colonoscopy \u2014\u00a0a procedure often used to screen for colon cancer \u2014\u00a0decreased by about 70% for March and April relative to rates seen in March and April of 2019, according to the study published in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2772537\" class=\"icon none\">JAMA Network Open<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Women aged 46 to 64 had a 67% relative reduction in mammograms, low-dose X-rays used to screen for early signs of breast cancer. Hemoglobin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/diabetes\/managing\/managing-blood-sugar\/a1c.html\" class=\"icon none\">A1C tests<\/a>, which measure blood-sugar levels, were down nearly 51%. And kids aged 0 to 2 saw a 22% relative reduction in vaccines, as health-care professionals have stressed the importance of routine pediatric immunizations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis adds detailed evidence to the anecdotal reports that Americans quit going to see the doctor when the pandemic shutdown started,\u201d lead study author Christopher Whaley, a policy researcher at the think tank RAND, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rand.org\/news\/press\/2020\/11\/05.html\" class=\"icon none\">said in a statement.<\/a> \u201cIf important visits are only delayed for a few months, there will likely be no harm. But if patients do not get important screenings, there could be long-term negative health consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Angioplasty, a procedure that opens blocked arteries, was down almost 17%. Relative use of musculoskeletal surgery decreased by 47%, cataract surgery declined nearly 60%, and MRIs fell by 45%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There was a roughly 4% relative decrease in chemotherapy treatments, the study found; use of cholesterol-lowering statins decreased by almost 3%, and use of antidiabetic drugs decreased 2%. Use of asthma medications, on the other hand, rose 11%.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetPullQuote\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u2018Extending care deferrals for many months, or even perhaps until a COVID-19 vaccine is developed could substantially harm patient health.\u2019<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 a recent study published in JAMA Network Open<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Meanwhile, telemedicine use surged during the pandemic\u2019s first two months. But the increased use in March and April \u201coffset only 40% and 42%, respectively, the reduction in office visits,\u201d the authors wrote.<\/p>\n<p> \u201c[W]e found smaller reductions in care use and lower rates of telemedicine use among patients residing in zip codes with lower-income or predominately racial\/ethnic minority populations,\u201d they added. \u201cThe extent to which access barriers to telemedicine contribute to lower rates of in-person care deferral and thus increases in potential exposure to COVID-19 should be examined in future work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The researchers were affiliated with RAND, Castlight Health<br \/>\n        CSLT,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/201298689\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+3.92%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       the University of Southern California\u2019s Sol Price School of Public Policy and Schaeffer Center, the National Bureau of Economic Research, and Stanford University\u2019s Center for Primary Care and Outcomes Research. They analyzed data from 5.6 million, 6.4 million and 6.8 million Americans with private employer-based health insurance in 2018, 2019 and 2020, respectively.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>To be sure, the analysis did not include data from groups like Medicaid or Medicare beneficiaries or people without insurance. The researchers also didn\u2019t look into whether care that people had delayed at the beginning of the coronavirus crisis \u201cwill be deferred until the future or avoided completely,\u201d nor did they examine the link between <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>-distancing policies and health-care use reductions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the reductions in care we observed are delayed by a few months and then return to previous levels, as some evidence suggests,<sup><\/sup>then patient health impacts may be limited, and the short-run declines in medical spending may lead to reduced annual 2020 medical spending,\u201d the authors wrote. \u201cHowever, extending care deferrals for many months, or even perhaps until a COVID-19 vaccine is developed could substantially harm patient health.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Other studies have found a similar decline in health-care utilization as Americans weigh the importance of preventive care against potential exposure to the coronavirus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n              \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n        media-object\n        type-InsetPullQuote\n          inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n        article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n          article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        Experts have also stressed the importance of getting a flu shot this year to help avoid overburdening the health-care system with a potential \u2018twindemic\u2019 of influenza and COVID-19 hospitalizations.<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       An analysis by the Health Care Cost Institute, an independent nonprofit <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcostinstitute.org\/about-hcci\" class=\"icon none\">partly funded<\/a> by four health-insurance companies that provide claims data, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/healthcostinstitute.org\/hcci-research\/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-the-use-of-preventive-health-care\" class=\"icon none\">found that<\/a> \u201ceven by the end of July 2020, utilization of many preventive services <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eared to be running below 2019 levels.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p> Mammograms and Pap smears fell 80% in April year over year and remained down by a respective 20% and 10% in July, that report found. Colonoscopies, which had declined nearly 90% in mid-April year over year, remained down 30% by July. But prostate-cancer screening PSA tests returned to their 2019 levels by this past June, and \u201cuse of services that cannot be deferred or forgone, like childbirth, have tracked more closely to 2019 levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Patients need to get \u201cback on track\u201d with preventive health care, Alexander Ding, a clinical assistant professor of radiology at the University of Louisville School of Medicine, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ama-assn.org\/delivering-care\/patient-support-advocacy\/preventive-care-pandemic-stretches-no-more-time-wait\" class=\"icon none\">said during a recent expert panel<\/a> hosted by the American Medical Association.
