on occasion, someone I know will lie to me. <span>People lie all the time<\/span>. Public figures do it<em> in public<\/em>; sometimes with impunity, other times with career-shattering repercussions.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-2 hKBnez js_video-sticky__top-limit\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-3 eCMXYG js_video-sticky__bottom-limit\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Since <span>lies and liars <\/span>are an unfortunate fact of life, it\u2019s important to be able to spot them. There <span>are a bunch of common indicators<\/span>, both non-verbal and verbal, that can help you identify if someone is pulling the wool over your eyes.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"sc-1bwb26k-1 fvCjqJ\" id=\"h10389\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Establish_a_baseline\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"js_header-anchor\" id=\"\"><\/a><strong>Establish a baseline<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">To determine if someone\u2019s trying to deceive you, you first have to establish a baseline understanding of how that person behaves when they\u2019re being honest. Someone\u2019s baseline is exhibited by their demeanor in mundane and routine situations. Look for a departure from this baseline, whether they\u2019re typically fidgety and scatterbrained or soft-spoken and reserved. Do be aware, if you suspect someone of lying, that many factors could be affecting their behavior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">However, if someone\u2014say, a notable public figure\u2014is repeatedly accused of lying, no matter the broader context, it might just be that external circumstances don\u2019t matter.
