\n NYPD retirements are surging, the city Independent Budget Office reports. And cops\u2019 statements to The Post leave no doubt about why: Morale is through the floor.<\/p>\n

In all, the department is already down 2,700 cops from last year\u2019s 36,900 total \u2014 and likely to continue dropping at least as long as Bill de Blasio stays in office.<\/p>\n

Some 2,400 officers have put in their paperwork so far this year, vs. 2,000 in the same period in 2019. The pandemic canceled one Police Academy class in March, and rioter-app<\/a>easing \u201cdefund the police\u201d moves canceled another in July.<\/p>\n

Thanks to the retirement surge, one 900-member class will start this month \u2014 not enough to overcome the rush to the exits.<\/p>\n

Mayor de Blasio\u2019s not the only problem: The City Council\u2019s law, advertised as \u201canti-chokehold\u201d but so expansive as to criminalize almost any subduing of a suspect, puts officers at personal legal risk if they physically engage a perp who resists arrest. And NYPD brass, obliged to try to make the mayor\u2019s orders work, aren\u2019t winning a lot of love, either.<\/p>\n

Public disrespect for police is rampant \u2014 and not just 2019\u2019s \u201cwater bucket\u201d assaults. Any officer making an arrest can suddenly be surrounded by a jeering crowd and cameraphones \u2014 that may include some who\u2019d get physical if they see an opportunity.<\/p>\n

Oh, and protesters who literally spit on cops \u2014 in the middle of a pandemic \u2014 face revolving-door \u201cjustice.\u201d Thanks to the state\u2019s still-broken \u201cno-bail\u201d law, all manner of perps walk free soon after arrest.<\/p>\n

Commanders understandably push street cops to keep doing their jobs \u2014 but they can\u2019t pretend the politicians will have an officer\u2019s back if something goes wrong, so the force winds up resenting the brass and still playing it safe.<\/p>\n

Unless and until city leaders get serious about supporting the police, the spiral downward is all too likely to continue.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
