link\",\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-41981388\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-41981388\">In November 2017<\/a><\/span>, the people of Zimbabwe woke up to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> that their country\u2019s military had seized control of state <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a> broadcasts and detained president Robert Mugabe, ushering in a new regime. <\/p>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-2 hKBnez js_video-sticky__top-limit\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-3 eCMXYG js_video-sticky__bottom-limit\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">This forceful power-grab had all the hallmarks of a coup d\u2019etat, defined by <span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fBlGIv js_link\" data-ga=\"[[&quot;Embedded Url&quot;,&quot;External link&quot;,&quot;https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/coup%20d'%C3%A9tat&quot;,{&quot;metric25&quot;:1}]]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/coup%20d'%C3%A9tat\">Merriam-Webster <\/a><\/span>as \u201cthe violent overthrow or alteration of an existing government by a small group.\u201d<!-- --> The Zimbabwean military, meanwhile, insisted that its forceful seizure of power was, in fact, not a coup.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">And therein lies the key: It\u2019s rare that the architects of a coup will outright say that they are attempting one. However, there are caveats: The side that <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to have popular momentum may attract more supporters, regardless of how much their message actually resonates with the body politic.<\/p>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-19 gvawPI connatix-container\"><script id=\"701055c47e5f49fc872a294b2cb3e6a3\">\n            cnxps.cmd.push(function () {\n                cnxps({\n                playerId: '5de06420-6a66-4898-8a57-ca65c11a0aa4'\n                , customParam1: \"not-lazy-loaded\"\n                }).render('701055c47e5f49fc872a294b2cb3e6a3');\n            });\n        <\/script><\/div>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\"><span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fBlGIv js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2017\/07\/the-not-so-secret-ingredients-of-military-coups\/\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/warontherocks.com\/2017\/07\/the-not-so-secret-ingredients-of-military-coups\/\">As Danny Orbach explained<\/a><\/span> in a 2017 book review of Naunihal Singh\u2019s <em>Seizing Power: The Strategic Logic of Military Coups:<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote data-type=\"BlockQuote\" class=\"sc-8hxd3p-0 ehyFRB\">\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Actors don\u2019t join the side they necessarily agree with, but the side they think most other actors are likely to support. Therefore, highly unpopular rebels may succeed, while popular rebels may fail.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"bxm4mm-11 gamHXh js_ad-mobile-dynamic  js_ad-dynamic ad-mobile-dynamic movable-ad\">\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-8 bxm4mm-9 dQlBGJ\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-12 iqioLK ad-unit ad-mobile\">\n<div is=\"bulbs-dfp\" class=\"ad-container dfp dfp-slot-MOBILE_IN_POST ad-mobile\" data-ad-unit=\"MOBILE_IN_POST\" data-targeting='{\"pos\":\"mobile_inpost\"}'><\/div>\n<div class=\"bt-wrapper\"><span data-uid=\"5d260804c9-384\" class=\"bt-uid-tg\" style=\"display:none !important;text-align:center\" data-css-selector=\"ad-container.ad-mobile\"><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"bxm4mm-8 bxm4mm-10 kbXecJ\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Even if it\u2019s not plainly obvious that a coup has been successfully staged, it\u2019s key that the group stealing power spread a message of victory, usually by assuming control of a country\u2019s broadcast channels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">As Orbach writes:<\/p>\n<blockquote data-type=\"BlockQuote\" class=\"sc-8hxd3p-0 ehyFRB\">\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">The conspirators do not need to waste time rumbling about their righteousness. Instead, they have to hammer home the idea that they have already won, that most important actors have already pledged their support for the coup. The resistance of Turkish citizens, along with some allies in the military, <span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"sc-1out364-0 hMndXN sc-145m8ut-0 fBlGIv js_link\" data-ga='[[\"Embedded Url\",\"External link\",\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/6cc9e69a1c5d4da1b6f509ce1152b0ed\",{\"metric25\":1}]]' href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/6cc9e69a1c5d4da1b6f509ce1152b0ed\">foiled the coup in a matter of hours.<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"sc-77igqf-0 bOfvBY\">Short of those life-risking endeavors, it\u2019s crucial that people who think there might be a coup afoot stay vigilant and watch out for some of the more subversive warning signs. On a tactical level, it\u2019s smart to actively communicate with those around you.
