“#Paige Howard has a special role in Nickelodeon’s ‘The Astronauts’<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Actress Paige Howard is used to being in front of the camera \u2014 but it\u2019s her voice that takes a co-starring role on Nickelodeon\u2019s new series<\/a> \u201cThe Astronauts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howard, 35, plays Matilda, the AI-powered onboard computer interacting with five teens accidentally launched into outer space. The 10-episode live-action series premieres Friday at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a different ballgame<\/a> and an exciting field to dive into,\u201d Howard says of her role as Matilda. \u201cI\u2019ve really fallen in love with voiceover work \u2026 and would love to continue with this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Astronauts\u201d centers around Samy (Miya Cech), Elliott (Bryce Gheisar), Martin (Keith L. Williams), Doria (Kayden Grace Swan) and Will (Ben Daon) \u2014 who are trying to navigate their new world aboard the Odyssey II spacecraft and are undecided whether the robotic-sounding Matilda is a friend or adversary.<\/p>\n

Daniel Knauf (\u201cCarnivale,\u201d \u201cThe Blacklist\u201d) created and wrote and the series. He\u2019s also an executive-producer, along with Imagine Entertainment \u2014 run by Paige\u2019s father, Ron Howard, and Brian Grazer \u2014 and Imagine Kids+.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey sent along a little character breakdown [for Matilda], which was very similar to what they would have sent if she was an onscreen character,\u201d says Howard. \u201cThat was really helpful, and then they gave me a couple of scenes and I auditioned on-camera. It was a very typical auditioning process.<\/p>\n

\u201cMatilda was described as being assertive and Alexa-like, but open to growth and evolution,\u201d she says, alluding to Amazon\u2019s ubiquitous interactive virtual assistant. \u201cInitially she\u2019s a little cooler [in her tone] but, as the series progresses, we see more of her colors \u2026 and she starts to shift pretty quickly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the vibe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howard says the industrywide shutdown impacted the way in which she recorded her role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was hired at the start [of production] and when I came online they had gone to Canada and filmed four episodes,\u201d she says. \u201cI literally got a call that they were going to bring me into the studio to start work \u2026 and that same week everything went down with COVID and quarantining.<\/p>\n

\u201cNickelodeon and the Imagine production teams got super-creative and innovative and together they managed to set up a pretty fantastic recording studio in my little New York City closet,\u201d she says. \u201cI got some of the footage from the first episode and then over the next few episodes it was me\u2026recording it at home\u2026 with the director over Zoom.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was laying down lines, and then they would see how they fit into the episode and would come back and ask me to do it again,\u201d she says. \u201cThen we\u2019d move on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Howard says that, due to this recording process, she has yet to meet her five co-stars \u2014 at least in-person.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven when you\u2019re making a film you go to the premiere and it\u2019s like, \u2018Oh my gosh, you\u2019re in this movie too!\u2019 If you don\u2019t have scenes together or a big chunk of screen time together it\u2019s like ships passing in the night,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve been fan-girling them like crazy all over Instagram. They\u2019re all so talented and impressive and intelligent.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were on my mind a lot \u2014 and a little part of me feels like I know them already.\u201d<\/p>\n

She says that getting the role of Matilda wasn\u2019t a lock \u2014 despite the involvement of her father\u2019s company.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been auditioning for a while and I\u2019ve auditioned for Imagine and Nickelodeon before,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s one of those things where if it fits, it fits. If it doesn\u2019t, no one is going to stretch it for me\u2026and this one was a really good fit.<\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, I don\u2019t know if my Dad got involved with [the series] at all,\u201d she says. \u201cOne thing that we\u2019re really good at in our family is having strong boundaries between work and what happ<\/a>ens in our family life. Of course we\u2019re really supportive of each other, like \u2018Give it your best shot,\u2019 but we don\u2019t get involved [in each other\u2019s careers] beyond that.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
