data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> company was valued at just under $3.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p> Just over a year later, BioNTech<br \/>\n        BNTX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214419716\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.93%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       is now worth around $25 billion and the Mainz,<strong> <\/strong>Germany-based company hit the headlines earlier this week as it became the front-runner in the race to bring a COVID-19 vaccine to market.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Shares in BioNTech soared 14% on Monday after the company said its experimental shot, which is being developed in partnership with U.S. drugmaker Pfizer<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.46%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       was more than 90% effective in preventing COVID-19, based on initial trial results from a Phase 3 clinical trial. This is the first coronavirus vaccine to prove its efficacy in a late-stage clinical study.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> BioNTech and Pfizer say their COVID-19 vaccine candidate is 90% effective, a much higher benchmark than anticipated <\/p>\n<p>The stock was 3% up in early trading on Tuesday and has now climbed 219% year-to-date. By comparison, the S&amp;P 500 has risen 9.7% during the same period.<\/p>\n<p>Here are five things you need to know about BioNTech:<\/p>\n<p><strong>HUSBAND AND WIFE TEAM BEHIND THE <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SCIENCE<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioNTech<br \/>\n        22UA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214587675\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.59%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was co-founded in 2008 by U\u011fur \u015eahin, chief executive of the company, and his wife \u00d6zlem T\u00fcreci, a fellow board member, along with Austrian cancer expert Christoph Huber.<\/p>\n<p>\u015eahin, 55, and T\u00fcreci, 53, are both scientists and the children of Turkish immigrants to Germany. \u015eahin\u2019s father worked in a Ford factory in Cologne.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>In 2001, the pair founded Ganymed Pharmaceuticals, a spin off from the universities of Mainz and Zurich that focused on developing a new class of cancer drugs called ideal monoclonal antibodies.<\/p>\n<p>Investors in Ganymed included German investment fund <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mig.ag\/files\/mig-verwaltung\/Dokumente%20Presse\/27052020_MIG_AG_PM_Biontech.pdf\" class=\"icon none\">MIG Fonds<\/a> as the family office of twins <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/thomas-struengmann\/?sh=3724fdc2336f\" class=\"icon none\">Thomas and Andreas Str\u00fcngmann<\/a>, who now hold a large stake in BioNTech. The brothers have long been big investors in biotech, having sold their generic drug company Hexal to Swiss drugmaker Novartis<br \/>\n        NVS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203243705\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.07%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       for around $7 billion in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, Ganymed was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astellas.com\/en\/news\/7846\" class=\"icon none\">sold <\/a>to Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma for $1.4 billion <\/p>\n<p><strong>BIONTECH\u2019S IPO<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioNTech raised $150 million in its U.S. initial public offering on Nasdaq on Oct. 9, 2019, after it sold fewer shares and at a lower price than originally planned, giving the company a market valuation of $3.4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>The IPO followed BioNTech\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.biontech.de\/news-releases\/news-release-details\/biontech-raises-usd-325-million-upsized-series-b-financing\/\" class=\"icon none\">$325 million fundraising<\/a> in July, which marked one of the biggest private financing rounds for a European biotechnology company in history.<\/p>\n<p>The fundraising was led by Fidelity Management &amp; Research Company, with participation from both new and existing investors, including the Str\u00fcngmann Family Office.<\/p>\n<p> \u015eahin and T\u00fcreci are now among the 100 richest Germans, according to German <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a>paper Welt am Sonntag.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATIONSHIP WITH PFIZER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioNTech<br \/>\n        22UA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/222361179\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.62%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       has had a relationship with Pfizer<br \/>\n        0Q1N,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203243414\/delayed\" class=\"\"><\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       since 2018, when the U.S. drugmaker agreed to pay the German company up to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20180815005735\/en\/BioNTech-Signs-Collaboration-Agreement-with-Pfizer-to-Develop-mRNA-based-Vaccines-for-Prevention-of-Influenza\" class=\"icon none\">$425 million<\/a> in an alliance to develop mRNA-based vaccines for the prevention of influenza. <\/p>\n<p>In March this year, Pfizer and BioNTech announced plans to jointly develop a COVID-19 vaccine. \u201cWe believe that by pairing Pfizer\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/investors.pfizer.com\/investor-news\/press-release-details\/2020\/Pfizer-and-BioNTech-to-Co-Develop-Potential-COVID-19-Vaccine\/default.aspx\" class=\"icon none\">development, regulatory and commercial capabilities<\/a> with BioNTech\u2019s mRNA vaccine technology and expertise as one of the industry leaders, we are reinforcing our commitment to do everything we can to combat this escalating pandemic, as quickly as possible,\u201d said Mikael Dolsten, Pfizer\u2019s chief scientific officer, at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine \u2014 called BNT162 \u2014 uses messenger RNA (mRNA), the molecules in cells that control protein production, to teach the immune system to make coronavirus-fighting antibodies. The mRNA technology is also being used by Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Moderna<br \/>\n        MRNA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205619834\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+8.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and CureVac<br \/>\n        CVAC,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/219999729\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.04%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span>\n      <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> CureVac\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine shows immune response in Phase 1 trial <\/p>\n<p>BioNTech and Pfizer will split the gross profits of the vaccine equally. BioNTech said that the vaccine will be priced \u201cwell below typical market rates.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBioNTech has been a loss-making company since our inception 12 years ago and we\u2019ve invested over $1 billion to develop our mRNA technology platform,\u201d Ryan Richardson, head of strategy at BioNTech, told a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b838d199-f027-368e-ae4f-728edc86a274\" class=\"icon none\">Financial Times<\/a> conference on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>VACCINE PRODUCTION<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioNTech and Pfizer are continuing to accumulate safety data and expect to <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ly for emergency use authorization in the U.S. soon after that.<\/p>\n<p>Based on current projections, Pfizer said it expects to produce globally up to 50 million vaccine doses in 2020 and up to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-announce-vaccine-candidate-against\" class=\"icon none\">1.3 billion doses in 2021<\/a>.<br \/>The investigational vaccine is a two-dose vaccine, so the first batch would likely be given to roughly 25 million people.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In June, BioNTech signed a \u20ac100 million debt financing agreement with the European Investment Bank for the development of its experimental shot, to help scale-up its commercial manufacturing capacity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In September, it also received <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/09\/15\/2093535\/0\/en\/BioNTech-to-Receive-up-to-375M-in-Funding-from-German-Federal-Ministry-of-Education-and-Research-to-Support-COVID-19-Vaccine-Program-BNT162.html\" class=\"icon none\">\u20ac375 million<\/a> in funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research to support its COVID-19 vaccine program. <\/p>\n<p>That same month, it announced the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.globenewswire.com\/news-release\/2020\/09\/17\/2094987\/0\/en\/BioNTech-to-Acquire-GMP-Manufacturing-Site-to-Expand-COVID-19-Vaccine-Production-Capacity-in-First-Half-2021.html\" class=\"icon none\">acquisition of a manufacturing site<\/a> in Marburg in western Germany from Swiss pharma group Novartis. The state-of-the art facility is expected to expand BioNTech\u2019s COVID-19 vaccine production capacity by up to 750 million doses a year, or more than 60 million doses a month, once fully operational, BioNTech said.<\/p>\n<p>BioNTech, which itself employs around 1,400 staff, already has two other sites in Germany producing the vaccine candidate for clinical trials, in addition to at least four Pfizer production sites in the U.S. and Europe. <\/p>\n<p><strong>DEAL WITH CHINA<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>BioNTech\u2019s vaccine partnership with Pfizer covers the entire global market except China, where it partners with Shanghai Fosun Pharmaceutical<br \/>\n        600196,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205018805\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+4.12%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n       BioNTech said in August that Hong Kong and Macau, China\u2019s autonomous territories, have ordered 10 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine.
