This angle provides stable gravitational points in the orbit for the asteroids as they move around the Sun. Astronomers believe most of these objects fragmented off a large parent body.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ad00\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, one of these<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/asteroid-that-killed-dinosaurs-hit-at-worst-possible-angle-ff70f0d611d?source=friends_link&amp;sk=a56172c4b1fcc3f359288ce6e07615b5\">asteroids<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>\u2014 (101429) 1998 VF31 \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ears to be different from its stony compatriots.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4c94\" class=\"kl km fh au kn ko kp kq kr ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"One_of_these_things_is_not_like_the_other%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>One of these things is not like the other\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"801b\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz lj ib ic id lk if ig ih ll ij ik il lm in io ip ln ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Astronomers from the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium (AOP) in Northern Ireland examined these Eureka bodies. However, it does resemble another body in the Solar System \u2014 our own<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/S5ycYRsqiqg\">Moon<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f987\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cMany of the spectra we have for asteroids are not very different from the Moon but when you look closely there are important differences, for example, the shape and depth of broad spectral absorptions at wavelengths of 1 and 2 microns. However, the spectrum of this particular asteroid seems to be almost a dead-ringer for parts of the Moon where there is exposed bedrock such as crater interiors and mountains,\u201d explains<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/armaghplanet.com\/mars-plays-shepherd-to-our-moons-long-lost-twin-aop-scientists-find.html\">Dr. Galin Borisov<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of Armagh Observatory and Planetarium.<\/p>\n<p id=\"2a59\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This asteroid, perhaps a kilometer across, regularly crosses the orbit of Mars as it revolves around the Sun once every 687 days.<\/p>\n<p id=\"7bd5\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The 101429 trojan\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/osiris-rex-shows-bennu-asteroid-in-action\/\">asteroid<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>was also found to contain more iron than its brethren, and higher levels of proxenes \u2014 a class of long-chain molecules found in many igneous and metamorphic rocks here on Earth.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"150e\" class=\"kl km fh au kn ko kp kq kr ks kt ku kv kw kx ky kz la lb lc ld le lf lg lh li cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"This_origin_story_rocks\"><\/span>This origin story rocks<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"6e12\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz lj ib ic id lk if ig ih ll ij ik il lm in io ip ln ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">This discovery begs the question \u2014 \u201cWhere did this<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/anchor.fm\/the-cosmic-companion\/episodes\/Interview-with-Dr--Ann-Virkki-of-Arecibo-Observatory---Astronomy-News-with-The-Cosmic-Companion-Video-and-Podcast-April-28--2020-eilbdn\">asteroid<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>originate?\u201d Researchers have several theories, although none are yet certain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"6d70\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThe asteroid could be genetically related to iron-rich primitive achondrite meteorites, may have originated as impact ejecta from Mars \u2014 a scenario proposed recently for the Eureka family asteroids \u2014 or could represent a relic fragment of the Moon\u2019s original solid crust, a possibility raised by the asteroid\u2019s close spectral similarity to areas of the lunar surface,\u201d researchers describe in an article detailing the study, published in the journal<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0019103520303602\"><em class=\"iv\">Icarus<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lucy Mission Overview: Journey to Explore the Trojan Asteroids\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/57aLfX3ZX2I?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"7350\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Analysis of the data suggests that 101429 was likely ejected from<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-nasa-find-life-on-mars-in-the-1970s-21c429ecf181?source=friends_link&amp;sk=73ef48b3e21db3c7bd6c0ad798fe9f62\">Mars<\/a>, a large asteroid, or \u2014 possibly \u2014 our own Moon.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c927\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThe early solar system was very different from the place we see today. The space between the newly-formed planets was full of debris and collisions were commonplace. Large asteroids \u2014 we call these planetesimals \u2014 were constantly hitting the Moon and the other planets. A shard from such a collision could have reached the orbit of Mars when the planet was still forming and was trapped in its Trojan clouds,\u201d states Dr. Apostolos Christou, an astronomer at AOP.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bb53\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The vast majority of trojans in our solar system \u2014 thousands, in fact \u2014 are found in the gravitational field of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-jupiter-collide-with-a-massive-planet-47353e4a9e62?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b38b80c83775cf91569cfb9f30d8e57b\">Jupiter<\/a>. These bodies are thought to be leftover from the formation of the Solar System.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8911\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">In 2010, an asteroid was discovered following Earth which was initially believed to be a trojan body accompanying our own planet. However, this asteroid \u2014 2010 TK7 \u2014 was a member of the Asteroid Belt which broke free, temporarily following Earth in an unstable orbit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"8c1f\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Trojans in the same orbit as Earth are more difficult to find than those around other worlds. Their positions relative to<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/could-aliens-find-life-on-earth\/\">Earth<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>require telescopes looking for them to point close to the Sun, which most telescopes cannot withstand.<\/p>\n<p id=\"be96\" class=\"hw hx fh hy b hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is it ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The Vera C. Rubin Observatory, with an 8.4 -meter telescope, will soon be searching the skies for signs of Earth-based trojans. The Lucy spacecraft, due for launch in 2021, will be the first\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm kk\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/voyager-2-finally-hears-from-nasa-a4502176f9cc\">robotic explorer<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to examine trojan bodies up close when it arrives at its destination at the orbit of Jupiter.
