Happily single and spending\u00a0<\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/nav><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>#The new Chinese digital consumers your business needs to target<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n                                <span>China, the site of COVID-19\u2019s initial large outbreak, has done exceptionally well at controlling the infection since then. This has enabled the country to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bnnbloomberg.ca\/imf-data-shows-virus-will-push-china-gdp-growth-well-beyond-u-s-1.1508650\"><span>kickstart its economy<\/span><\/a><span> in record time but along the way, things have changed. Understanding and adapting to these changes may take time but it will pay off in the end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Understanding the globe\u2019s most active and unconstrained consumers isn\u2019t just <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-china-luxury-analysis-idUSKBN26L07G\"><span>a lifeline<\/span><\/a><span> for startups when other markets are closed or slow. They offer a glimpse at trends in the world\u2019s largest market after the coronavirus. We can see some patterns already present in the West that are new to China and some patterns that might make their way from China to the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Now if your brand is ever contemplating going into the Chinese market, there are four core emerging groups and three familiar ones that I believe to be essential to future success, based on my experience here in China. Let\u2019s start off with the emerging groups:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Young_adults_in_lower-tier_cities_shine\"><\/span><b>1. Young adults in lower-tier cities shine<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>This group of consumers is less affected by an overall slowdown because consumption in lower-tier cities <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chinadailyhk.com\/article\/133998#Residents-of-lower-tier-cities-are-more-spendthrift-survey-shows\"><span>is accelerating<\/span><\/a><span> despite what\u2019s h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening in top tier cities. Their income is increasing but their cost of living isn\u2019t.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While they tend to pursue lower priced items, they\u2019re also making luxury purchases. Their annual luxury purchases tally up to about 393,900 RMB, compared to 344,100 RMB in Tier 1 cities and 275,000 RMB in Tier 2 cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese tech companies are already <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/news\/tencent-backed-short-video-app-093000680.html\"><span>profiting handsomely<\/span><\/a><span> from tapping this market made up mostly of young and single consumers they call the Xiachen (\u4e0b\u6c89 \u201csunken\/down\u201d) market.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The number of internet users in this group increased by 24.61 million in March and 70% of new users on Taobao and JD.com came from here. Pinduoduo, Vipshop, and Xianyu are also popular platforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They\u2019re buying electric appliances, entertainment products, real estate, cars, domestic beauty brands, and products from short-video platforms. In terms of cosmetics, Est\u00e9e Lauder and Perfect Diary are the top brands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Silver_surfers_ride_the_digital_wave\"><\/span><b>2. Silver surfers ride the digital wave<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>China has an aging population so engaging with them is a necessity and an opportunity brands should grasp in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since the pandemic began, older consumers have become <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sixthtone.com\/news\/1005303\/how-covid-19-sparked-a-silver-tech-revolution-in-china\"><span>much more comfortable online<\/span><\/a><span> and are now firmly a part of China\u2019s e-commerce shopping force. In the first half of 2020, seniors made 55% of their apparel purchases online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>There are more senior female internet users at 57.1% and around 43% of active senior netizens are from 1st and 2nd Tier cities. Most of them use Taobao for online shopping, followed by JD and Pinduoduo. They use <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a> networks like WeChat and QQ, video platforms like iQiyi, and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> and information sites and apps.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They\u2019re looking for experiences, social connections, and learning opportunities. In terms of products, they want home appliances, health supplements, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> options, insurance and financial products. China\u2019s elderly social entertainment market is expected to reach 882 billion RMB in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>China\u2019s elderly have no time for brands that talk down to them. Marketing should feature older people who are proud of their age, their achievements and aren\u2019t afraid to <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/abacus\/culture\/article\/3029400\/forget-millennials-chinas-newest-internet-stars-are-senior-citizens\"><span>show their flair<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RVbHJsUbKkU\"><span>personality.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_The_market_for_pet_owners_is_soaring\"><\/span><b>3. The market for pet owners is soaring\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>This is a <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/society\/article\/3102101\/coronavirus-china-pandemic-payoff-has-been-good-pets-interest\"><span>growing consumer group<\/span><\/a><span> in many markets as Covid prompted <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/pets\/florida-animal-shelter-clears-kennel-coronavirus-adoptions\/\"><span>a dramatic decrease in pet relinquishment<\/span><\/a><span> and a huge rise in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/coronavirus-pet-adoption-boom\/\"><span>pet adoptions<\/span><\/a><span> in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/aug\/16\/dog-gone-eescue-pet-shelters-emptied-by-surge-in-demand-during-pandemic\"><span>many<\/span><\/a> <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/health\/coronavirus\/120493044\/coronavirus-hundreds-of-pet-adoptions-in-one-weekend-as-kiwis-hunker-down-at-home\"><span>countries<\/span><\/a><span>. 202.4 billion RMB was pumped into China\u2019s pet market in 2019, a YoY increase of 18.5%, with online sales exceeding 30 billion RMB. Chinese pet lovers are even buying luxury products for their pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>One survey found that although only 22% of households in China have pets, the numbers still add up to 100 million families and pet owners tend to be concentrated in first and second tier coastal cities.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Younger pet-owners are eager to provide the best lifestyle for their pets and there\u2019s rising demand for dry shampoos, paw lotions, and pet cleansers. Between June and December of last year, these products saw triple-digit sales growth on Tmall Global. Pet owners have even been using social media to arrange playdates for their pets.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>For brands that aren\u2019t in the pet space, co-branding items or promoting with pet bloggers and influencers that match your brand is a smart move.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4_Power_women_are_staking_their_claim\"><\/span><b>4. Power women are staking their claim\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Women in their 30s and older are undoubtedly one of the most discussed consumer groups in China this year. Two shows \u2013 <\/span><i><span>Sisters Who Make Waves<\/span><\/i><span> and <\/span><i><span>Nothing But Thirty<\/span><\/i><span> \u2013 have been instrumental in <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/prospero\/2020\/08\/26\/a-new-hit-chinese-drama-explores-the-pressures-faced-by-young-women\"><span>a different kind<\/span><\/a><span> of <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/radiichina.com\/nothing-but-thirty-feminist-tv\/\"><span>representation <\/span><\/a><span>for women in pop culture in China \u2013 older, strong, empowered and some who are divorced or single mothers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Chinese women with higher education and greater participation in the workforce have more <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/business\/companies\/article\/3098445\/little-sisters-army-young-women-china-reshaping-mergers-and\"><span>financial autonomy<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.cgtn.com\/news\/2020-08-23\/She-conomy-Unmarried-female-home-buyers-surge-in-China-TbDx1epTqw\/index.html\"><span>personal freedom<\/span><\/a><span> than ever before and are spending more time online than ever before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They\u2019re looking for experiences, adventure, beauty, self-care, health, fashion, and knowledge but they\u2019re not only spending more on themselves. They\u2019re also responsible for three quarters of household purchasing decisions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Recommendations, promotions, group buying, and live-streaming influence female consumers a lot. This is reflected in their use of WeChat mini-programs, WeChat private groups and shopping recommendation communities like Red. Luxury brands are benefiting most from the 70% of global luxury spending growth thanks to China\u2019s affluent middle class, millennials and female consumers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Brands should avoid stereotypes in their marketing campaigns for women in this group and pay attention to consumer sentiment on Chinese social media. But in addition to those, there are three familiar groups that continue to play a big role:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"1_Gen_Z_consumers_with_zeal_but_on_a_budget\"><\/span><b>1. Gen Z consumers with zeal, but on a budget<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Gen Z\u2019s dot com kids were born after 1995 and are expected to make up 27% of the population by 2025. They\u2019re digital natives who spend an average of 4.7 hours a day on their phones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They like <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/insideretail.asia\/2020\/05\/19\/cashed-up-chinese-consumers-are-buying-more-domestic-brands\/\"><span>Guochan<\/span><\/a><span> (\u56fd\u4ea7 \u201cdomestic\u201d) products featuring traditional Chinese design, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pandaily.com\/5-consumption-trends-observed-in-2020-report\/\"><span>live streaming e-commerce<\/span><\/a><span>, Pinduoduo, with its integrated e-commerce and group buying, and Xianyu\u2019s second-hand trading.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Because of the pandemic, they\u2019ve adjusted their priorities and more than 70% are now buying for their families instead of just themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"2_Middle-aged_men_are_managing_their_image\"><\/span><b>2. Middle-aged men are managing their image<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>In the 30-49 year old age group there are 11 million more men than women and, for luxury and grooming products, they\u2019re a large potential consumer group.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The top three products for men in their 40s are alcohol, 3C (computers, communication, and consumer electronics) products, and watches. They also like home appliances, auto accessories, tobacco, <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/style\/article\/asia-men-hair-loss-bald-scn-wellness\/index.html\"><span>hair loss treatments<\/span><\/a><span>, grooming products, supplements, vitamins, and \u2014 surprise, surprise \u2014 skincare items. They\u2019re especially interested in products that help them look younger.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"3_Happily_single_and_spending\"><\/span><b>3. Happily single and spending\u00a0<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Singles were already an up and coming group but since COVID-19, more have adopted the single life as a health protection strategy. Men make up the majority of China\u2019s 260 million single adults. They\u2019re seeking experiences, enjoyment, high quality, and convenience.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Hot pot restaurant chain, Haidilao\u2019s strategy for its single customers was to provide them with <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.caixinglobal.com\/2020-08-29\/single-and-proud-chinas-millennials-embrace-a-solo-lifestyle-101598817.html\"><span>teddy bears<\/span><\/a><span> so they didn\u2019t have to eat alone and had a photo op for social media. Over 70% of post-90s who live alone also have pets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Brands need to re-establish a connection with consumers and embrace them as they, and the world around them, changes. The effort will be worth it.
