Short Circuit<\/em><\/strong>, the\u00a01986 comedy featuring robot\u00a0Johnny 5, is getting a remake \u2013 with a Latin-American\/Hispanic-American take. Spyglass Media<\/a> Group is developing the remake, with\u00a0Eduardo Cisneros<\/strong> and Jason Shuma<\/strong>n tapped to handle the script<\/a>. In the original movie, an experimental military robot is struck by lightning and gains a human-like intelligence.<\/p>\n

Hey kids, do you remember\u00a0Short Circuit<\/em>? It was a sci-fi comedy from 1986 that featured lovable robot Johnny 5 and actor\u00a0Fisher Stevens in brownface. It was a hit and even spawned a sequel. And now, it\u2019s getting a remake. Variety<\/a> reports that Spyglass Media is developing a\u00a0Short Circuit<\/em> remake and that writers\u00a0Eduardo Cisneros and Jason Shuman to bring\u00a0Latin-American\/Hispanic-American elements to the story.\u00a0Cisneros and Shuman\u2019s credits include the screenplay for the upcoming comedy Half Brothers<\/em>, which is set to arrive in December.
\nIn the original\u00a0Short Circuit<\/em>, \u201cWhen one of an experimental range of military robots is hit by lightning, it is given consciousness. It escapes from the military and befriends a young woman, Stephanie Speck. Its creator, Newton Crosby, is desperate to find it, or his entire project may be scrapped.\u201d\u00a0Ally Sheedy, Steve Guttenberg, Fisher Stevens, Austin Pendleton, and G. W. Bailey, starred, with Tim Blaney as the voice of the robot, who was\u00a0officially<\/em> named Number 5 but eventually given the nickname\u00a0Johnny 5.\u00a0Saturday Night Fever<\/em> director\u00a0John Badham helmed the film.<\/p>\n

This isn\u2019t the first time talk of a\u00a0Short Circuit<\/em> sequel has surfaced. Back in 2008, Dimension Films scored the rights to the material and planned a remake, with Robot Chicken<\/em> writer\u00a0Dan Milano handling the script. In 2009,\u00a0Paul Blart: Mall Cop<\/em> director\u00a0Steve Carr signed on to direct the project. But Carr eventually left the project, and by\u00a02012, it was announced that\u00a0Tim Hill\u00a0(Hop<\/em>) was writing and directing a remake that was going to age down the main character into a pre-teen. Needless to say, none of these remakes made it passed the drawing board.<\/p>\n

Project X Entertainment\u2019s James Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein, and William Sherak will produce this new attempt at a remake, with Rehab Entertainment\u2019s John W. Hyde, who executive produced the original film, serving as executive producer along with Terissa Kelton. This isn\u2019t the only remake\/reboot on the docket for Spyglass and Project X \u2013 they\u2019re also handling the new\u00a0Scream<\/em> movie, which is currently in production.<\/p>\n

Do people still care about\u00a0Short Circuit<\/em>? Is it the type of property audiences are itching for? I really don\u2019t know. I can\u2019t remember the last time I even heard someone bring it up. But hey, maybe there\u2019s an entire world of\u00a0Short Circuit<\/em> enthusiasts out there just waiting for this news<\/a>.<\/p>\n
