\n In honor of Juneteenth \u2014 now set to be a statewide holiday \u2014 the New York Public Library has released a Black Liberation Reading List for young readers.<\/p>\n

The list comes from the NYPL\u2019s 95-year-old Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and includes 65 book titles geared toward teaching children and teens about the black experience, history and current events.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is so important to remember, honor and celebrate Juneteenth, such a critical moment in the history of our nation, and one that continues to have tremendous impact on today\u2019s events,\u201d says Schomburg Center director Kevin Young in a press release. The June 19 holiday, one of the oldest in America, marks the freeing of the last US slaves \u2014 in Galveston, Texas \u2014 on June 19, 1865.<\/p>\n

\u201cWithout honest contemplation and discussions, there won\u2019t be progress,\u201d Young continues, adding that if everyone takes the time to better understand the black experience, \u201creal change can happ<\/a>en.\u201d<\/p>\n

The list includes the board books \u201cA Is for Activist\u201d and \u201cAntiracist Baby,\u201d as well as Jacqueline Woodson\u2019s \u201cBrown Girl Dreaming\u201d and \u201cThe Day You Begin.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Library has made \u201cas many e-copies as possible of the titles,\u201d available to browse and borrow for free via the Library\u2019s digital collections.<\/p>\n

The Schomburg Shop\u2019s\u00a0manager, Rio Cortez, began compiling the list following the killing of George Floyd.<\/p>\n

\u201cMany of our patrons connect with the Schomburg Shop specifically for the books by black and brown authors whose work enables black and brown children to see themselves in complete and dynamic ways,\u201d says Cortez.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Schomburg Center released a Black Liberation Reading List for adults. In eight days, that list has already received 7,000 checkouts, the library says.<\/p>\n

On Juneteenth and throughout the following week, several of the listed books will be read by authors, politicians and librarians on the library\u2019s social<\/a> channels. The full virtual programming roster will be shared on NYPL\u2019s site.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
