“#Renewed COVID-19 rules draw backlash from skeptical GOP lawmakers<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n Restive Republicans across the country are increasingly pushing back on the coronavirus restrictions being imposed \u2014 or even just suggested \u2014 by Democratic executives as the pandemic grinds on.<\/p>\n

In Oregon, state legislators objected vociferously Friday<\/a> to Democratic Gov. Kate Brown\u2019s new limits on gatherings, bars, gyms, and restaurants as statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations hit a new high of 308 cases, The Oregonian reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe can\u2019t have a second statewide shutdown and expect we\u2019re going to have any type of working economy coming out of this next year,\u201d GOP state Sen. Tim Knopp said.<\/p>\n

Brown\u2019s new 25-person cap on all gatherings, including religious services and family events, drew particular ire. The limits may be enforced<\/a> by state and local police, with violators subject to fines or arrest, Brown said Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cA bold infringement on the citizens of Oregon\u2019s baseline rights,\u201d proclaimed state Sen. Dallas Heard.<\/p>\n

Several state lawmakers are pursuing a lawsuit to halt Brown\u2019s emergency orders because they say she overreached her constitutional authority.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem says she will refuse to enforce any mask mandates or lockdown requirements that projected president-elect Joe Biden may issue next year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe president doesn\u2019t have the authority to institute a mask mandate,\u201d a Noem spokesman said Friday<\/a>. \u201cFor that matter, neither does Gov. Noem, which is why she has provided her citizens with the full scope of the science<\/a> and trusted them to make the best decisions for themselves and their loved-ones.\u201d<\/p>\n

Noem, a firm Trump ally who is seen as a conservative rising star, has refrained from issuing top-down pandemic restrictions in her state.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe already know that lockdowns don\u2019t stop the spread of the virus,\u201d she wrote in a social media<\/a> post this week. \u201cHowever, they destroy small businesses and jobs, and they make it difficult for families to put food on the table.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
