“#’Rhinestone Cowboy’ writer struggles after COVID-19 battle<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n COVID-19 knocked the New Jersey native who penned the megahit \u201cRhinestone Cowboy\u201d right out of his saddle.<\/p>\n

And now the family of Newark-born singer-songwriter Larry Weiss is hoping friends, strangers and those who\u2019ve enjoyed his work \u2014 including Jersey icon Bruce Springsteen \u2014 will ride to his rescue.<\/p>\n

Weiss became seriously ill in July after contracting corona from his roommate \u2014 who succumbed to the virus.<\/p>\n

The 79-year-old Weiss spent two months in and out of the hospital battling high fevers, low oxygen levels and two bouts of pneumonia. At one point he was almost put on a ventilator.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a time of reflection. It was a time to look back at my life and to think about things that I had done and could have done. And want to do. I never felt I was going to check out,\u201d Weiss told The Post from his longtime residence in Nashville.<\/p>\n

Weiss admitted he was \u201cscared\u201d when originally rushed to the hospital on July 29.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had no control over my breathing,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Now on the road to wellness, Weiss \u2014 whose tunes have been recorded by everyone from Eric Burden to Jeff Beck and Barry Manilow \u2014 faces mounting medical bills and a lengthy rehab.<\/p>\n

His daughter, Stephanie, who lives in Seattle, launched a GoFundMe campaign<\/a> Oct. 19 that has raised nearly $6,000 \u2014 including $100 from the Nashville Songwriters Association Int\u2019l.<\/p>\n

Weiss\u2019 Garden State cousin has tried to enlist the help of Springsteen \u2014 who covered \u201cRhinestone Cowboy\u201d last year.<\/p>\n

Weiss called Springsteen\u2019s rendition \u201cfantastic,\u201d noting that Glenn Campbell\u2019s version \u201cwas a bit glossy, but Bruce gave it more meat. Closer to the street. It was more towards what the song was about\u2026a reflection of my experiences on Broadway as a songwriter starting out in the 1960s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Weiss\u2019 insurance will \u201conly cover only a small portion of what is necessary for his proper home care\u201d the GoFundMe explains.<\/p>\n

Weiss gets royalties for \u201cRhinestone Cowboy\u201d \u2014 which went\u00a0 No. 1 for Campbell in 1975 \u2014 but he said, \u201cit\u2019s just enough for me to get by, but not to pay my medical expenses.\u201d<\/p>\n

Weiss said he\u2019d \u201clove to hear\u201d from The Boss, but, \u201cthat\u2019s up to him. I\u2019m not asking him for anything. I\u2019m just happ<\/a>y that he recorded my song. It was a great honor for me.\u201d<\/span>\n <\/div>\n
