\n When Jim Harbaugh returned to Ann Arbor, Michigan envisioned winning its first national title since 1997. Now, the Wolverines will be lucky to finish .500.<\/p>\n

Spiraling towards their first losing season since 2014, the Wolverines suffered their worst home loss since 1935 in Saturday\u2019s 49-11 blowout against Wisconsin, and are off to their worst start to a season since 1967.<\/p>\n

In Michigan\u2019s worst-ever defeat to the Badgers, the Wolverines managed to compile just 219 total yards and 10 first downs, while holding possession for less than 20 minutes. Meanwhile, the defense became the first Big Ten team in 15 years to not record a sack or force a turnover in five consecutive halves, according to ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Michigan has lost three straight game<\/a>s since its season-opening win against Minnesota.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot a good place as a football team right now, and that falls on me,\u201d Harbaugh said after the game. \u201cGot to get after really going back to basics in everything that we do and look at everything that we\u2019re doing. Everybody\u2019s got to do better. I\u2019m at the front of the line in the accountability.\u201d<\/p>\n

It\u2019s now easy to forget just how much Harbaugh had achieved when he was brought back to his alma mater. In his first head coaching job, he went 11-1 in back-to-back seasons at San Diego. In 2010, he led Stanford to a 12-1 record, while finishing with the No. 4 ranking in the nation. His 49ers were a pair of fumbled punts away from reaching the Super Bowl the next year. In the 2012 season, the 49ers were five yards from scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the final minutes of the Super Bowl. The next season, he reached the NFC Championship for a third straight season.<\/p>\n

Inheriting a team which went 5-7 in 2014, Harbaugh went 10-3 in his first season as coach at Michigan. In 2015, a double-overtime loss to Ohio State stopped the Wolverines from reaching the Big Ten title game. In four of his first five years in Ann Arbor, Michigan finished ranked in the top 20 in the nation.<\/p>\n

But now, with one year left on his contract after this season and NFL rumors swirling, Harbaugh app<\/a>ears headed to his first losing season since 2008 and suffering the greatest embarrassment of his coaching career, losing by a combined score of 87-33 the past two weeks.<\/p>\n

He admits what is obvious: The team is \u201cnot close to where it should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt can only be those three things: what you\u2019re doing, how you\u2019re doing it, who\u2019s doing it,\u201d Harbaugh said. \u201cWe\u2019ve got to look at all those things right now. Right now, I\u2019d say all three need to be addressed.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe thing that stands out the most is the coaching \u2026 making sure that [the players] have an understanding of what to do and, therefore, they can go for it,\u201d he added. \u201cBecause there seems to be hesitation, there seems to be some confusion, some lack of communication on both sides of the ball, offensively and defensively, and getting things adjusted to, getting things fixed, just identifying how to improve in those areas are some of the first things that we\u2019re going to address.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the former NFL quarterback\u2019s biggest problems is who to start at quarterback. On Saturday, Harbaugh benched Joe Milton, who threw interceptions on his first two passes and finished 9-of-19 for 98 yards. In relief, Cade McNamara completed 4-of-7 passes for 74 yards and a touchdown.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s something we really have to look at,\u201d Harbaugh said of Milton\u2019s interceptions. \u201cDid Joe understand the keys? Where he was looking? Threw a ball right to another guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Michigan\u2019s best chance to pick up another win comes Saturday at Rutgers, which is coming off a loss to previously winless Illinois and has just one Big Ten win since 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to go back and go through everything that you\u2019re doing,\u201d Harbaugh said. \u201cLook for all ways to improve. All ways to improve. Win by all means necessary.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
