<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>       Two new \u201cmega-labs\u201d will open in early 2021 in the U.K., in an attempt to double testing capacity in the U.K., the government said.<\/p>\n<p> The new facilities, one in Leamington Spa in the Midlands in England and another in an unidentified site in Scotland, will employ up to 4,000 people and increase the number of standard polymerase chain reaction tests by <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/two-new-megalabs-to-open-in-2021-to-transform-the-uks-diagnostic-facilities\" class=\"icon none\">600,000 a day<\/a> when operating at full capacity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Current testing capacity is at around <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.data.gov.uk\/\" class=\"icon none\">519,000<\/a>, according to the latest data. However, just 379,955 tests were actually processed.<\/p>\n<p>As well as processing COVID-19 tests, these new diagnostic facilities will be used for critical illness including cancer, cardiovascular and metabolic diseases, according to the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/two-new-megalabs-to-open-in-2021-to-transform-the-uks-diagnostic-facilities\" class=\"icon none\">Department and Health Social Care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Health secretary Matt Hancock said the boost in diagnostic capabilities would strengthen the U.K.\u2019s infrastructure to respond to future epidemics, as well as improve care for other critical illnesses, including cancer and cardiovascular and metabolic diseases.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe didn\u2019t go into this crisis with a significant diagnostics industry, but we have built one, and these two mega labs are another step forward,\u201d Hancock said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransforming the U.K.\u2019s diagnostic facilities is not only essential to beating this virus, but it is necessary to build back better \u2014 so we are better prepared in future for testing on a massive scale,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> The entire city of Liverpool is set to be tested for COVID-19 in bid to break lockdown cycle <\/p>\n<p>Cutting-edge <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> made by British manufacturers will be used in both labs, including automation, robotics and consumables. \u201cThis means more tests will be processed more quickly and at a lower cost, and therefore faster turnaround times for test results,\u201d the DHSC said.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>A recruitment drive has already started for the Leamington Spa lab, and a campaign is due to start shortly in Scotland once details of the site are confirmed, the government said.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. already has five Lighthouse laboratories in Milton Keynes, Alderley Park, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/glasgow-covid-19-mega-lab-opens\" class=\"icon none\">Glasgow<\/a>, Cambridge and Newport, with others being set up in Newcastle, Plymouth and Brants Bridge.<\/p>\n<p> <strong>Read:<\/strong> Here are 5 things to know about BioNTech and the married couple developing the COVID-19 vaccine with Pfizer   <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">News<\/a> of the two new mega labs comes after U\u011fur \u015eahin, chief executive of German biotech BioNTech<br \/>\n        BNTX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214419716\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+4.30%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       whose vaccine candidate is being developed in partnership with Pfizer<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.85%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       said on Sunday that he was \u201cvery confident\u201d the experimental shot could halve transmission of the virus, resulting in a \u201cdramatic reduction in cases\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u015eahin <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/health-54949799\" class=\"icon none\">told the BBC<\/a> his aim was for normality to return next winter, with the vaccine program rolled out throughout 2021. <\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, the U.K. government announced another <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.data.gov.uk\/\" class=\"icon none\">24,962 confirmed COVID cases<\/a> as well as a further 168 deaths within 28 days of a positive test. <\/p>\n<p>BioNTech and the U.S. drugmaker Pfizer last week announced that their jointly developed vaccine candidate has been found to be 90% effective in a late-stage clinical trial \u2014 the final stage before commercial licensing. <\/p>\n<p>The U.K. is expected to receive 10 million doses of the BioNTech\/Pfizer vaccine by the end of the year, with a further 30 million doses already ordered.
