“#Bill de Blasio’s pandemic bungling<\/strong>”

\n Hand it to The City for digging up the proof that Mayor Bill de Blasio\u2019s team bungled the onset of the pandemic<\/a> even more than anyone knew.<\/p>\n

The city agency responsible for procuring\u00a0masks, ventilators and other vital gear was so overwhelmed that it lost track of deliveries and distribution of key equipment, from masks to ventilators.<\/p>\n

Tasked with executing $1.4 billion in emergency, no-bid contracts, the\u00a0Department of Citywide Administrative Services struggled with neither a\u00a0proper inventory-tracking system nor experienced staff.<\/p>\n

It\u00a0ordered supposedly \u201chigh-quality\u201d masks and life-saving ventilators from vendors who just\u00a0weeks prior were suppliers of auto parts and hoverboards. When the goods proved far less than promised, it paid anyway \u2014 and then ordered more from the same vendors (one of them a big Blas\u00a0donor).<\/p>\n

Its efforts to buy surgical masks wound up leaving it with hundreds of thousands of dust masks that went unused.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, its Warehouse Management System failed to work\u00a0to its specs. Workers couldn\u2019t systematically monitor the huge number of PPE supplies and other shipments that arrived at DCAS\u2019s cavernous Queens storehouse \u2014 nor what went out, and where to. Purchase orders went\u00a0missing because the system used wasn\u2019t compatible with WMS.\u00a0Trailers\u00a0of unusable equipment now sit untouched.<\/p>\n

Comptroller Scott Stringer is investigating<\/a> \u2014 but City Hall isn\u2019t\u00a0cooperating,\u00a0he told The City: \u201cThe city is playing a game<\/a>. They\u2019re slow-walking their documents and it will not be tolerated.\u201d<\/p>\n

One frustrated DCAS manager blurted out at a May meeting: \u201cStop this s\u2013\u200at! Stop this s\u200a\u2013\u200at! Fix the problem!\u201d We fear that one reason for City Hall\u2019s stall is that they never did \u201cfix the problem.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
