\n Dr. Scott Atlas, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, called for people to \u201crise up\u201d up after Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced a three-week \u201cpause to save lives\u201d during the coronavirus pandemic.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe only way this stops is if people rise up. You get what you accept. #FreedomMatters #StepUp,\u201d Atlas said in a tweet<\/a> Sunday night about the new public health measures.<\/p>\n

Whitmer, who has app<\/a>ealed to the Trump administration to intervene in the pandemic, announced a series<\/a> of measures \u2013 including closing colleges, high schools, workplaces and in-person dining \u2013 to control the spread of the disease, the Washington Post reported.<\/p>\n

Responding to Atlas\u2019 tweet, Whitmer said on CNN<\/a> on Sunday night: \u201cWe know that the White House likes to single us out here in Michigan, me out in particular. I\u2019m not going to be bullied into not following reputable scientists and medical professionals.\u201d<\/p>\n

Whitmer told host Wolf Blitzer that she consults \u201cpeople that actually have studied and are well-respected worldwide on these issues, not the \u2014 not the individual that is doing the president\u2019s bidding on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n

Atlas, a radiologist who joined the White House task force over the summer, is a known proponent of herd immunity in the fight against the coronavirus \u2013 a stance that puts him at odds with most health experts.<\/p>\n

Michigan Attorney General<\/a> Dana Nessel echoed fellow Democrat Whitmer\u2019s message, casting Atlas\u2019 post as \u201cdisappointing, irresponsible, and the reason why the United States finds itself in such desperate circumstances regarding COVID-19.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI look forward to a new federal administration that works cooperatively with our state government to protect Michigan residents,\u201d Nessel said on Twitter<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cA patriot is one who protects America from its enemies, both foreign and domestic,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

\u201cCOVID-19 is the enemy, not each other. Stop pitting Americans against each other and start supporting policies proven to effectively fight the virus,\u201d Nessel added.<\/p>\n

Whitmer, who has incurred the wrath of far-right groups during the pandemic, also was the target of an alleged terrorism kidnapping plot, according to federal and state officials.<\/p>\n

The alleged scheme included plans to overthrow several state governments that the suspects \u201cbelieve are violating the US Constitution,\u201d according to a federal criminal complaint cited by CNN.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
