Chris Columbus<\/strong>, who directed the Christmas classics\u00a0Home Alone<\/em><\/strong> and\u00a0Home Alone 2: Lost in New York<\/em><\/strong>, has some choice words for where Disney can leave the change, you filthy animal. The\u00a0Home Alone<\/em> director is not happ<\/a>y about the\u00a0Home Alone<\/em> reboot in the works at Disney+<\/strong>, which is set to star\u00a0Jojo Rabbit<\/em> scene-stealer\u00a0Archie Yates<\/strong> and be directed by\u00a0Dan Mazer<\/strong>\u00a0(Dirty Grandpa<\/em>). And while he didn\u2019t go as far as to call the House of Mouse a filthy animal, the sentiment is the same.<\/p>\n

While on the press circuit for his latest holiday movie,\u00a0The Christmas Chronicles 2<\/em>, the topic of Chris Columbus\u2019 1990 Christmas classic\u00a0Home Alone<\/em> inevitably came up.\u00a0But in his interview with\u00a0Insider<\/a>, Columbus had less than sweet things to say about the upcoming Disney+ reboot of\u00a0Home Alone,<\/em> which he revealed he wasn\u2019t even consulted on:<\/p>\n

\u201cNobody got in touch with me about it, and it\u2019s a waste of time as far as I\u2019m concerned. What\u2019s the point? I\u2019m a firm believer that you don\u2019t remake films that have had the longevity of\u00a0Home Alone<\/em>. You\u2019re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It\u2019s just not going to happen. So why do it? It\u2019s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film \u2014 a live-action version of that. What\u2019s the point? It\u2019s been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Columbus\u2019 criticism of Disney is not without evidence: Disney\u2019s abundant remakes of its animated classics have frequently been criticized for being pale imitations of the originals. And with\u00a0Home Alone<\/em> on frequent rotation on TV and cable every Christmas, it will be difficult for any remake to try to put its own spin on a beloved film that is still very fresh in people\u2019s memories. But Disney+ needs original content, and the\u00a0Home Alone<\/em> IP was fresh for the remaking.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Home Alone\u00a0<\/em>reboot is currently in production, but on hold due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Details on the\u00a0Home Alone<\/em>\u00a0reboot haven\u2019t been readily available, but the story is said to focus on a young boy named Max who goes to war with a husband and wife after he takes a porcelain doll from them.\u00a0The\u00a0Home Alone<\/em>\u00a0reboot is set to be directed by\u00a0Dan Mazer\u00a0(Dirty Grandpa<\/em>,\u00a0I Give It a Year<\/em>) and will\u00a0star\u00a0Jojo Rabbit<\/em>\u00a0supporting actor\u00a0Archie Yates in the lead role. He\u2019ll be joined by\u00a0Saturday Night Live<\/em>\u00a0alums\u00a0Kenan Thompson<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Chris Parnell<\/strong>,\u00a0Toy Story 4<\/em>\u00a0voice star\u00a0Ally Maki<\/strong>,\u00a0Irish actress\u00a0Aisling Bea<\/strong>, comedia<\/a>n\u00a0Pete Holmes<\/strong>,\u00a0Veep<\/em>\u00a0star\u00a0Timothy Simons<\/strong>,\u00a0Rob Delaney<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Ellie Kemper<\/strong> as the\u00a0main character\u2019s parents, and SNL<\/em> writer\u00a0Mikey Day<\/strong>, who is also co-writing the\u00a0Home Alone<\/em>\u00a0reboot with\u00a0Streeter Seidel<\/strong>. And while Columbus is not on board, there\u00a0are rumors that original\u00a0Home Alone<\/em> star\u00a0Macaulay Culkin<\/strong>\u00a0might make a cameo, but that has yet to be confirmed.<\/p>\n
