Ian Holm<\/strong>, a\u00a0classically trained Shakespearean actor with an intimidating list of credits, has died. Holm\u2019s agent issued a statement saying the actor \u201cdied peacefully in the hospital in the company of his family and caregiver,\u201d adding, \u201cCharming, kind and ferociously talented, we will miss him hugely.\u201d Holm was 88. The actor became an established member of the Royal Shakespeare Company before moving into television and film.<\/p>\n

Ian Holm was one of those actors who was great in just about anything. No matter how small the role \u2013 he turns in a quiet, devastating performance in\u00a0Garden State<\/em><\/strong>, a movie everyone would rather forget about these days \u2013 Holm radiated a certain presence that was impossible to ignore. The actor got his start by chance: while at a dentist visit, he met\u00a0Henry Baynton, a well-known Shakespearean actor who helped Holm train for admission to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which Holm entered in 1949.<\/p>\n

In the years to come, Holm would app<\/a>ear on stage and TV, and had minor roles in films like\u00a0Nicholas and Alexandra<\/em><\/strong> (1971) and Mary, Queen of Scots<\/em><\/strong> (1971). It was his work as Ash, the science<\/a> office\/secret android in Ridley Scott\u2019s\u00a0Alien<\/em><\/strong> (1979) that truly catapulted Holm to prominence. After that, Holm would earn an Academy Award nomination for his work in 1981\u2019s\u00a0Chariots of Fire<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The actor would go on to appear in Terry Gilliam films\u00a0Time Bandits<\/em><\/strong> (1981) and\u00a0Brazil<\/em><\/strong> (1985), and Kenneth Branagh films such as\u00a0Henry V<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1989) and\u00a0Mary Shelley\u2019s Frankenstein<\/em><\/strong> (1994). He delivered a melancholy performance in the haunting 1997 film\u00a0The Sweet Hereafter<\/em><\/strong>, and even managed to bring dignity to dreck like 2001\u2019s\u00a0From Hell<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Other notable films from Holm include\u00a0Kafka<\/em><\/strong> (1991),\u00a0The Fifth Element\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(1997),\u00a0The Madness of King George<\/em><\/strong> (1994),\u00a0Big Night\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>(1996),\u00a0The Aviator<\/em> <\/strong>(2004), and voice work in films like\u00a0Wisconsin Death Trip<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>(1999) and\u00a0Ratatouille<\/em> <\/strong>(2007). Near the end of his career, Holm would play Bilbo Baggins in Peter Jackson\u2019s\u00a0Lord of the Rings<\/em><\/strong> trilogy, arguably his most famous role, and cameo as the character again in\u00a0The Hobbit<\/em><\/strong> trilogy, with 2014\u2019s\u00a0The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies<\/em> being Holm\u2019s final film role.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve always been a minimalist,\u201d Holm said of his acting. It was Bogart who once said, \u2018If you think the right thoughts, the camera will pick it up.\u2019 The most important thing in the face is the eyes, and if you can make the eyes talk, you\u2019re halfway there.\u201d<\/p>\n
