\n Juneteenth will be an official holiday in New York City beginning next year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Friday.<\/p>\n

\u201cStarting next year, Juneteenth will be an official holiday and an official New York City schools holiday,\u201d the mayor said at his daily press briefing.<\/p>\n

Juneteenth is a day commemorating the official end of slavery.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a celebration of a liberation that never really came. The fact is it\u2019s also a day of reckoning,\u201d Hizzoner continued. \u201cFour hundred years of American history tell us one simple thing \u2026 for 400 years, one group of Americans has been treated profoundly unequal.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many states, including New York, have made Juneteenth, which falls on June 19 each year, an official holiday.<\/p>\n

The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in 1863 but it wasn\u2019t enforced until the end of the Civil War two years later.<\/p>\n

On June 19, 1865, Union troops led by Gen. Gordon Granger rode into Galveston, Texas to deliver the news<\/a> to slaves there that the Confederates lost the war \u2014 and they were free.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
