Mmm, even just writing that feels fantastic.<\/p>\n<p>So, this is the 14th edition of\u00a0<em>Plugged In<\/em>, meaning I\u2019m beginning to see some trends played out across the newsletters. And, if there\u2019s one topic that has united them all, it\u2019s the <span>simple and joy of being obsessed with things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And, this week, I have a new obsession to share with the class:\u00a0cassettes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The past 7 days have been a whirlwind. In that time I\u2019ve researched second-hand decks, ordered one, got it hooked up to my sound system, and have already started amassing a cassette collection. Whether that\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thenextweb.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=22ec88eb9b9d8bc3bcf660787&amp;id=d73cbba45f&amp;e=c7faf54fbe\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/thenextweb.us1.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3D22ec88eb9b9d8bc3bcf660787%26id%3Dd73cbba45f%26e%3Dc7faf54fbe&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1605769259297000&amp;usg=AFQjCNEAnDG2i92kfECllmc7mqFYex20Yg\">browsing Reddit communities<\/a><span>, flicking through excel sheets of second-hand cassettes sourced off <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.marktplaats.nl\/\">Marktplaats<\/a> (the Dutch eBay), or, simply, just thinkin\u2019 \u2019bout tapes. I\u2019m enveloped by them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_do_you_like_cassettes_so_much\"><\/span>Why do you like cassettes so much?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to put a finger on. I guess, firstly, I\u2019m a sucker for analogue music in <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a>. Although most of my listening is done digitally (it\u2019s just so damn convenient), it\u2019s an undeniably different experience when you have to physically\u00a0<em>put<\/em> something on.<\/p>\n<p>Now, I\u2019ve been collecting records for years \u2014 and they\u2019re still my analogue format of choice \u2014 but cassettes offer something different.<\/p>\n<p>If vinyl were a person, they\u2019d probably wear immaculate suits that are strangely fragile. And they\u2019d listen to jazz. If cassettes were a person they\u2019d most likely make their own clothes out of stuff they found on the street and walk around making trumpet noises with their mouth.<\/p>\n<p>What I\u2019m getting at is cassettes feel more homegrown, more accessible, more of the people. I have wonderful memories of being younger and making my own mixtapes, of recording things of the radio. There was something magnificently DIY about the format.<\/p>\n<p>So, like anything, I\u2019m probably into cassettes for three main reasons: pretentiousness, nostalgia, and my never-ending desire to\u00a0<em>collect.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_never-ending_joy_of_%E2%80%98things\"><\/span>The never-ending joy of \u2018things\u2019<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The other topic I wanted to talk about is broader. Specifically,<span>\u00a0I wanted to ponder on why we get so hooked on physical items.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And the answer I came to? The pure learning experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I think this is what people who are negative or dismissive about the joy of\u00a0<\/span><em>stuff<\/em><span>\u00a0miss. You can look at something like my\u00a0cassette tape fixation and, quite legitimately, ask \u201cwhat\u2019s the fucking point? What a waste of time. And money.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>But an interest like this isn\u2019t solely about actually\u00a0<em>using it<\/em>. There\u2019s legitimately\u00a0so much more stuff to learn \u2014 and that\u2019s before even talking about all the bands putting out tapes, or the rise of cassette-only labels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This is how I\u2019d put the experience of buying things you\u2019re bang into: it\u2019s like\u00a0the wardrobe from the <em>Narnia<\/em>\u00a0books getting dropped off at your house. They\u2019re an entranceway to an entirely new world that\u2019s packed with<span>\u00a0fresh experiences. And I\u2019ll never, ever tire of that feeling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>So, have you had your eye on a new thing? Good. Then you have my support to go and buy it. Actually, scratch that, I\u00a0<\/span><em>urge<\/em><span>\u00a0you to go and buy it.
