The energy seen by astronomers told of the collision of a pair of neutron stars, creating a kilonova explosion. This event, releasing more energy in a half-second than our Sun will produce in 10 billion years, left a rare object behind in the debris.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fadd\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">When astronomers examined the eruption, they found evidence of a magnetar \u2014 an ultradense neutron star, roughly the size of a city, housing a powerful magnetic field.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"f136\" class=\"jv jw fh au jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Im_still_going_to_need_your_insurance_information%E2%80%A6\"><\/span>I\u2019m still going to need your insurance information\u2026<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"b526\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy kt ia ib ic ku ie if ig kv ii ij ik kw im in io kx iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The discovery \u2014 the first time a collision of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/tyler-gorda-of-the-university-of-virginia-astronomy-news-with-the-cosmic-companion-june-23-2020\/\">neutron stars<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>has ever been seen \u2014 was made through studies conducted in visible wavelengths of light, as well as infrared, radio, and X-ray frequencies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"eb8c\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The first light from the event, 7.6 billion light-years from Earth, was seen in the form of a highly-energetic short-gamma ray burst. These are gamma-ray bursts that last less than two seconds (longer GRBs are thought to be the result of the collapse of the core of a supermassive star).<\/p>\n<p id=\"8587\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Gamma rays have the highest frequency of all known forms of electromagnetic radiation. However, this display radiated energy throughout the electromagnetic spectrum.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><em>[Read: <span class=\"c-message_attachment__title\"><span dir=\"auto\">Neural\u2019s market outlook for artificial intelligence in 2021 and beyond<\/span>]<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"49c4\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Typically, astronomers expect the collision of a pair of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/wolf-rayet-stars-disguised-as-an-exotic-stellar-peacock-and-the-wolf\/\">neutron stars<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>to result in the near-instantaneous collapse of the dead stars into a black hole. However, this was not what astronomers found as they watched the aftermath of the GRB 200522A explosion.<\/p>\n<p id=\"e00c\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cOur study shows that it\u2019s possible that, for this particular short gamma-ray burst, the heavy object survived. The aftermath, lasting a few days, is marked by collisions between material racing away from the site of the collision at fantastic speeds, and the envelope of gas surrounding the event. This is followed by the kilonova glow of moving particles swirling around the region of space surrounding the collision.<\/p>\n<p id=\"fc1b\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">Kilonovae can be 1,000 times brighter than a typical supernova explosion. Only one such confirmed event has been seen before this latest display \u2014 in 2017.<\/p>\n<p id=\"bf0a\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">However, the kilonova glow from GRB 200522A was found to be 10 times greater than anyone expected, particularly in<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/meet-spherex-nasas-newest-mission-to-explore-the-early-universe-launching-in-2023-234f5953b849?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b898f52576929972518af6066c0ff0f9\">infrared wavelengths<\/a>, confounding researchers.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9f48\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThese observations do not fit traditional explanations for short gamma-ray bursts. Given what we know about the radio and X-rays from this blast, it just doesn\u2019t match up. Such a process could have resulted in the release of vast amounts of electromagnetic radiation, the study suggests.<\/p>\n<p id=\"9a91\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cThe intense flashes of gamma rays from these bursts appear to come from jets of material that are moving extremely close to the speed of light. The jets do not contain a lot of mass \u2014 maybe a millionth of the mass of the Sun \u2014 but because they\u2019re moving so fast, they release a tremendous amount of energy across all wavelengths of light,\u201d<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/2020\/nasas-hubble-sees-unexplained-brightness-from-colossal-explosion\">NASA explains<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"afd2\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">First seen by astronomers using NASA\u2019s Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, observations were quickly initiated at other telescopes \u2014 including the Hubble Space Telescope, the Very Large Array of radio telescopes, the W.M. Keck Observatory, and the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope network.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jv jw fh au jx jy jz ka kb kc kd ke kf kg kh ki kj kk kl km kn ko kp kq kr ks cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"You_have_to_break_a_few_eggs_if_you_want_to_make_a_magnetar\"><\/span>You have to break a few eggs if you want to make a magnetar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p id=\"a748\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy kt ia ib ic ku ie if ig kv ii ij ik kw im in io kx iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The radioactive decay of heavy elements from the kilonova explosion is believed to produce critical elements in the Cosmos, including<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/gPOEk47KUAk\">gold<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and uranium.<\/p>\n<p id=\"85d0\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The collision, which should have formed a black hole, instead (apparently) formed a magnetar, a supermassive, highly-energetic neutron star. Just around two dozen magnetars have been discovered so far.<\/p>\n<p data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Neutron Stars Collide in GRB 200522A Kilonova Explosion, Forming a Magnetar\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/DD24iG9VrF0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p id=\"f9da\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">\u201cWe only have one confirmed and well-sampled kilonova to date. So it is especially exciting to find a new potential kilonova that looks so different. This discovery gave us the opportunity to explore the diversity of kilonovae and their remnant objects,\u201d said Jillian Rastinejad, a graduate student working with Fong.<\/p>\n<p id=\"04fc\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The team also suggested two other possible processes that could have formed the magnificent burst seen from GRB 200522A. One possibility is that two waves of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"cm ky\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/HyLhJUIdGGM\">fast-moving particles<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>crashed into each other, releasing energy mimicking the formation of a magnetar. Or, unknown methods of radioactive decay might be responsible for the display. However, the team believes astronomers are, in fact, seeing the creation of a magnetar.<\/p>\n<p id=\"205c\" class=\"hv hw fh hx b hy hz ia ib ic id ie if ig ih ii ij ik il im in io ip iq ir is ez cg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If this event did form a magnetar, astronomers expect to see a release of radio waves from the region over the next few years.
