{"id":114562,"date":"2020-11-17T23:50:25","date_gmt":"2020-11-17T20:50:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/teachers-unions-demand-end-to-in-person-learning-amid-covid-19-spike\/"},"modified":"2020-11-17T23:50:25","modified_gmt":"2020-11-17T20:50:25","slug":"teachers-unions-demand-end-to-in-person-learning-amid-covid-19-spike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/teachers-unions-demand-end-to-in-person-learning-amid-covid-19-spike\/","title":{"rendered":"#Teachers unions demand end to in-person learning amid COVID-19 spike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Teachers unions demand end to in-person learning amid COVID-19 spike<\/strong>&#8221;<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2020\/11\/teacher-feature.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n                        Teachers\u2019 unions across America are calling for the halt of in-person learning as coronavirus cases climb once again.<\/p>\n<p>Although some state governments have relaxed health restrictions, allowing schools to reopen their doors with precautionary measures in place, the success of a classroom setting amidst the pandemic has been a mixed bag.<\/p>\n<p>In August, a Georgia school district was <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/12\/us\/georgia-school-coronavirus.html\">forced to quarantine<\/a> nearly 1,200 students and staff members after a second-grader tested positive on the first day of instruction.<\/p>\n<p>Georgia, led by Republican Gov. Brian Kemp, was one of the states with the least regulation \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2020-04-24\/georgia-allows-barber-shops-and-gyms-to-reopen-offering-a-preview-of-life-after-lockdown\">it opened bowling alleys<\/a> and barbershops in April <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.11alive.com\/article\/news\/health\/coronavirus\/report-fauci-birx-trump-reject-kemp-georgia-reopening\/85-766a8b10-3a64-4161-95b0-31e74fe9da4e\">against the direction<\/a> of experts leading the White House Coronavirus Task Force.<\/p>\n<p>However, New York City \u2013 which took the brunt of the blow in March \u2013 had cases plateau, prompting Democratic Mayor Bill de Blasio to declare victory in October.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe did it, New York City,\u201d he said on the city\u2019s third \u201cfirst day\u201d of school.<\/p>\n<p>The mayor\u2019s jubilant announcement came <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/09\/18\/nyregion\/schools-reopen-delay-nyc.html\">following multiple delays<\/a> in the process.<\/p>\n<p>A month later, the former 2020 presidential candidate has had to reverse course. He warned parents last week that schools <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/15\/nyregion\/coronavirus-nyc-schools-shutdown.html\">would likely shutter<\/a> again if the city\u2019s positivity rate exceeded 3%.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement on Monday came even after recent studies showed little to link the relationship between K-12 schooling and the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n<p>Nevertheless, heart rates rise as cases do and teachers and staff members \u2013 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/need-extra-precautions\/evidence-table.html\">older and perhaps with comorbidities<\/a> \u2013 have cause for concern.<\/p>\n<p>The United States lays claim to over a fifth of the world\u2019s coronavirus cases and has seen the most deaths, according to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/coronavirus.jhu.edu\/map.html\">data from Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>With more than 150,000 new cases daily, states like California, Michigan, Washington State, and Oregon have moved to revoke privileges like indoor dining and gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>Experts warn that another 100,000 to 200,000 Americans could die from the virus over the next few months if significant action is not taken, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/11\/16\/us\/coronavirus-lockdowns-restrictions.html\">The New York Times reported Monday.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Philadelphia\u2019s Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney introduced <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcphiladelphia.com\/news\/coronavirus\/philadelphia-targets-indoor-gatherings-gyms-and-dining-with-new-covid-19-restrictions\/2599101\/\">new coronavirus-related rules as well,<\/a> telling his residents that the city does not \u201ctake any of this lightly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBelieve me, more than anything in the world, I wish none of this was necessary,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/patch.com\/new-york\/new-york-city\/we-did-it-de-blasio-declares-victory-nyc-school-reopening\">he said.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Pennsylvania State Education Association (PSEA) \u2014 which represents around 180,000 educators \u2014 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/pennsylvania-schools-remote-instruction-covid-19-surge-psea\/\">is urging school districts<\/a> to comply with Kenney\u2019s restrictions, requesting that any district within a county experiencing substantial COVID-19-spread transition to solely remote instruction.<\/p>\n<p>More than half of Pennsylvania\u2019s 67 counties fall into that jurisdiction, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.health.pa.gov\/topics\/disease\/coronavirus\/Pages\/Monitoring-Dashboard.aspx\">state data shows.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe state departments of Health and Education developed these guidelines based on good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> and what the infection rates are in a school\u2019s community,\u201d PSEA President Rich Askey said Wednesday <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psea.org\/news--events\/newsstand\/press-center\/news-release---november-11-2020\/\">in a statement.<\/a> \u201cWe must follow these guidelines to the letter. It\u2019s the best way for us to slow the spread of this virus and keep our students, staff and their families safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rhode Island teacher unions are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.providencejournal.com\/story\/news\/education\/2020\/11\/16\/ri-teachers-unions-call-return-remote-learning-over-holidays\/6309980002\/\">asking The Plantation State\u2019s leadership<\/a> for a \u201choliday pause,\u201d moving to distanced learning from an already hybrid model by next week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cViral caseloads coupled with a lag in contact tracing, staffing shortages due to quarantines, and the arrival of colder weather negatively impact health, safety, and instruction,\u201d the National Education Association Rhode Island and Rhode Island Federation of Teachers and Health Professionals wrote in a statement. \u201cThe organizations agree a temporary move to statewide distance learning is a common-sense critical step in driving down incidence rates.<\/p>\n<p>Teachers in Chicago\u2019s Marquardt School District 15 urged Tuesday for an \u201cim<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te switch to remote learning\u201d after Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot issued a stay-at-home advisory effective Monday, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/coronavirus\/ct-dupage-county-teachers-covid-concerns-20201110-er5rpuj2tzcf3nqqkzcuyd3tc4-story.html\">the Chicago Tribune reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In Virginia, Fairfax County Public Schools Superintendent <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dcist.com\/story\/20\/11\/16\/fairfax-covid-public-schools-delay-return-learning\/\">Scott Brabrand announced<\/a> that cases in the area have exceeded \u201cthe threshold to expand our in-person learning\u201d and that plans to return thousands of students to classrooms would be suspended.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes as Northern Virginia teachers\u2019 associations representing 12,000 employees <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.insidenova.com\/headlines\/northern-virginia-teacher-associations-urge-governor-to-return-to-virtual-only-learning\/article_d00032d2-27a7-11eb-b753-d38743d9c958.html\">sent a letter<\/a> to Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam saying that the state should return to Phase 2 of their reopening plan \u2014 limiting in-person instruction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt continues to be clear that Northern Virginia is past the point of safe metrics for in-person learning in our school buildings,\u201d the unions wrote, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/\">according to The Washington Post.<\/a> \u201cEveryone, including educators, wants our schools to be back to normal, but by opening when it\u2019s not safe to do so, we increase the likelihood that normal will never come.\u201d\n            <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
