“#Matthew McConaughey & His Mom Get WAY Candid About Their Personal Issues On Red Table Talk!

\nMatthew McConaughey<\/strong> has a great relationship with his mom now \u2014 but as we know it wasn\u2019t always that way!<\/p>\n

On Tuesday\u2019s Red Table Talk<\/em>, the Fool\u2019s Gold<\/em> star and his mom Mary<\/strong> McConaughey<\/strong> virtually stop by the table to chat with Jada Pinkett Smith<\/strong>, Willow Smith<\/strong>, and Adrienne Banfield-Jones<\/strong> about their relationship \u2014 particularly, the near decade<\/em> where Matthew wasn\u2019t speaking to her!<\/p>\n

Recalling how his momma got a bit too caught up in his fame when his career took off, the Oscar<\/strong> winner explained:<\/p>\n

\u201c[My mom] and I had a rough patch about eight years after I got famous, but we healed that up back in 2004. As soon as I got famous after A Time to Kill<\/em>, I started having my weekly Sunday call home to call my mother. Mother wasn\u2019t answering the phone \u2014 a fan of my fame was answering the phone. I was trying to find my own balance with fame and stuff, and I would share things with her and, you know, to whatever amount of innocence it was \u2014 we can now completely laugh at it \u2014 but some of the things I would share might show up in the six o\u2019clock news<\/a> three days later.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Yikes. Not good!<\/p>\n

As it turned out, Mary\u2019s tongue was wagging so much that Matthew had to ask her to stop. The 51-year-old continued:<\/p>\n

\u201cFor instance, coming home at my beach house, I got a buddy that calls me saying, \u2018Are you watching this? Put on Channel 4,\u2019 or whatever it was, it was Hard Copy <\/i>or whatever, and here is a camera going through our bedroom. Mom is leading the camera saying, \u2018And here\u2019s the bedroom where I caught him with Michelle\u2026 no big deal because she didn\u2019t last. Over here\u2019s the bathroom, of course I walked in on him in there and caught him doing you know what before.\u2019 And I\u2019m over here going, \u2018Holy s**t, Mom!\u2019 I call her up and of course she\u2019s watching it too, so I pick up the phone and I hear the same show in the background. I go, \u2018Mom!\u2019 [and she says] \u2018What are you talking about?\u2019 I go, \u2018What do you mean, what am I talking about? I\u2019m watching the same damn thing you are. You got Hard Copy <\/i>in my bedroom!\u2019 She goes, \u2018Oh that\u2026I didn\u2019t think you\u2019d find out.’\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Oop!<\/p>\n

For his own protection, McConaughey ended up keeping things from his mother for eight years. But he eventually got around to sharing things with Mary once his career was more stable.<\/p>\n

The Texas native recalled:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo there were years there that I would not share things with her because I was finding my own balance, building my own ship and I was like, \u2018Look, Mom. Loose lips will sink ships. There are a lot of people that would like to know these things and it\u2019s none of their business.\u2019 I was not able to talk to her as my mom for about eight years and then I got my career stabilized enough. My boat was built well enough that I didn\u2019t think she could sink it and then I just took the reins off and said, \u2018Mom, hit that red carpet. Talk to all of them, tell them all the stories you want\u2019 and she\u2019s been great about it since.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Good to hear!<\/p>\n

Elsewhere in the interview, the pair discussed Mary\u2019s tumultuous relationship with his late father, James<\/strong>, whom she married three times \u2014 and divorced twice. According to Mary, James loved her to death \u2014 perhaps a bit too literally.<\/p>\n

She said of his death:<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know how he died, don\u2019t you? My husband died making love to me. And I remember saying when he fell back, I said, \u2018What\u2019s the matter, big boy? I wear you out?\u2019 And he\u2019s [giving] no response, no response and I\u2019m thinking, \u2018Oh my god, something\u2019s wrong.\u2019 \u2026 I had no idea that it was too much. His heart just stopped, you know? We had a party for him, kind of a celebration of his life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
