Mel Gibson<\/strong>, a great actor and not-so-great human being, has decided to remind us that\u00a0Lethal Weapon 5<\/em> <\/strong>is still a very real possibility. The potential sequel to the action franchise has been running hot and cold for a few years now, with word surfacing in 2017 that original director Richard Donner<\/strong> was working with Gibson and co-star Danny Glover<\/strong> to get the film off the ground. By 2018, though, Donner changed his tune and said that the project was probably dead. But in January of this year,\u00a0producer\u00a0Dan Lin<\/strong>\u00a0said that the sequel\u00a0was<\/em> going to happen. And now, Gibson seems to be affirming that.<\/p>\n

Anytime I write a story about Mel Gibson I have to do a little song and dance at the beginning because it\u2019s important. As an artist, I appreciate Gibson. I think he can deliver genuinely great performances, and I think he\u2019s a damn good filmmaker \u2013 despite the backlash over the years, I still like\u00a0Braveheart<\/em>, and I think\u00a0Apocalypto<\/em> is fantastic. But Gibson is also, by all accounts, a rotten individual. I try very hard to separate the art from the artist in this business, but with Gibson, it\u2019s difficult. He has a long history of abusive statements, but, to be fair, he\u2019s also said in the past that he suffers from both alcoholism and manic depression. Does that excuse his actions? No, not really \u2013 but it does offer a bit of an explanation. Still, there are many who believe that Gibson\u2019s career should probably be over by now, but it\u2019s clearly not \u2013 he has a new movie arriving this month called\u00a0Fatman<\/em>, where he plays a gun-toting Santa Claus.
\nOkay, now that I\u2019ve gotten that out of the way, let\u2019s talk about\u00a0Lethal Weapon 5<\/em>. In 2017, word broke that Gibson, Danny Glover, and director Richard Donner were all discussing making\u00a0Lethal Weapon 5<\/em> with Warner Bros. Talk of the potential sequel continued throughout the year, but by 2018, Donner had changed his tune, saying: \u201cI wanted to end it on an emotional note, and I don\u2019t think it\u2019s gonna happen.\u201d He also said the script was \u201cvery dark\u201d and called\u00a0Lethal Finale<\/em>.<\/p>\n

With that, it seemed like the sequel was dead, and all seemed quiet on the\u00a0Lethal Weapon 5<\/em> front. But then, at the beginning of this year,\u00a0producer Dan Lin said that the sequel\u00a0was<\/em> still in the works. \u201cWe\u2019re trying to make the last\u00a0Lethal Weapon<\/em>\u00a0movie,\u201d Lin said. \u201cAnd Dick Donner\u2019s coming back. The original cast is coming back. And it\u2019s just amazing. The story itself is very personal to him. Mel and Danny are ready to go, so it\u2019s about the script.\u201d<\/p>\n

And now, here\u2019s an update: it\u2019s still happening, I guess? Mel Gibson recently appeared on\u00a0Good Morning America<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>(via CBR<\/a>)\u00a0and when asked if Lethal Weapon 5<\/em> was going to happen, he responded in the affirmative and said: \u201cThe man who was behind all that, the man who brought it to the screen and gave it its, the goodies, is working on it right now: Richard Donner. He\u2019s a legend.\u201d<\/p>\n

So there you have it: somewhere out there, Richard Donner is still hammering away at getting\u00a0Lethal Weapon 5<\/em> made. The sequel would bring back Gibson and Glover as mismatched cops\u00a0Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh, and would almost certainly involve a scene where or both of these guys observe that they\u2019re too old for this shit.<\/p>\n
