There\u2019s <strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong>\u2018s\u00a0<strong><em>The Irishman<\/em><\/strong> coming from The Criterion Collection. There\u2019s the long-delayed\u00a0<strong><em>The New Mutants<\/em><\/strong>. And then there are not one but two different box sets \u2013 a 4K collection for the<strong>\u00a0<em>Resident Evil<\/em> <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> and a set for the infamous<strong>\u00a0<em>I Spit On Your Grave<\/em><\/strong> series.\u00a0<span id=\"more-646058\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Irishman | Final Trailer | Netflix\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RS3aHkkfuEI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Irishman\"><\/span><strong>The Irishman<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Martin Scorsese<\/strong>\u2018s gangster epic\u00a0<strong><em>The Irishman<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0is not\u00a0<em>GoodFellas<\/em>. It\u2019s\u00a0<em>Casino<\/em>. It\u2019s not\u00a0<em>Mean Streets<\/em>. Scorsese detractors may want to lump this title into a \u201cmore of the same\u201d category, but nothing could be further from the truth. If\u00a0<em>GoodFellas<\/em> is a movie about youthful characters who think they\u2019re going to live forever,\u00a0<em>The Irishman<\/em> is all about men nearing the end of their lives and feeling the cold, lonely, icy embrace of death taking hold. Based on a \u201ctrue\u201d story, the film follows Frank Sheeran (<strong>Robert De Niro<\/strong>), who sort of just lucks his way into the criminal underworld. After being taken under the wing of Philly mob boss\u00a0Russell Bufalino (<strong>Joe Pesci<\/strong>, who came out of retirement for this film and gave perhaps the best performance of his career as a result), Frank ends up becoming the best buddy of Teamsters boss Jimmy Hoffa (<strong>Al Pacino<\/strong>, having a\u00a0<em>lot<\/em> of fun). This sets the stage for a decade-spanning story of friendship and betrayal, resulting in a film that\u2019s both surprisingly funny and more than a little tragic. Much has been said about Pesci and Pacino\u2019s performances since they\u2019re both showier, but De Niro deserves praise too. His stuttery, clumsy Frank Sheeran isn\u2019t a cool gangster like Jimmy the Gent from\u00a0<em>GoodFellas<\/em>. He\u2019s a pretender. A brute who just h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ens to have powerful friends, and not much else. And what\u2019s he left with in the end? Nothing. But c\u2019mon \u2013 the physical release comes from The Criterion Collection. How can you pass that up? I say this every time I have to write about a Blu-ray movie that\u2019s streaming: physical will always,\u00a0<em>always<\/em> look better than streaming \u2013 this release even comes with a brand new 4K master approved by Scorsese. This ignoble end to the Fox-era\u00a0<em>X-Men<\/em> films became infamous for its many, many release date delays. Rumors of massive reshoots swirled about \u2013 but the reshoots never happened. Then, finally, the film hit theaters in the midst of the coronavirus, where it grossed a not-great\u00a0$45.8 million worldwide. Now, it\u2019s hitting Blu-ray and digital. So what\u2019s the verdict? Is this a misunderstood triumph that deserved better? Sadly\u2026no. It\u2019s not. I wanted it to be! I loved the first trailer for the film, which made it look like a horror movie. A superhero horror film? That\u2019s a neat idea! Sadly,\u00a0<em>The New Mutants<\/em> does nothing with it. Sure, there are horror movie elements here, but none of them work. In fact, nothing really works here. The film follows a group of young mutants \u2013\u00a0<strong>Maisie Williams<\/strong> as Rahne Sinclair, who can turn into a wolf;\u00a0<strong>Anya Taylor-Joy<\/strong> as Illyana Rasputin, who has the power to summon up a supernatural sword when she\u2019s not being a total asshole; <strong>Henry Zaga<\/strong> as Roberto \u201cBobby\u201d da Costa, who bursts into flames when he gets too horny (yes, really); <strong>Charlie Heaton<\/strong> as Samuel \u201cSam\u201d Guthrie, who can explode off the ground into the air like a cannonball; and <strong>Blu Hunt<\/strong> as newcomer Danielle \u201cDani\u201d Moonstar, who doesn\u2019t know what her mutant power is just yet. But whatever it is, it caused the death of her father and many others. Now she\u2019s locked up in a surprisingly empty hospital with the other young mutants, and\u2026well. That\u2019s it, really. It\u2019s shocking how little happens here. The characters just mill about, and then eventually there\u2019s a big CGI-enhanced climax. It\u2019s bland to the extreme, and none of the cast members make it work. Even Taylor-Joy, who is usually great in everything, is shockingly bad here. The film deserves some points, I suppose, for being the rare superhero movie with an openly gay relationship \u2013 between Rahne and Dani \u2013 but even that comes across as weirdly bland. They\u2019re clunky; they\u2019re derivative; they\u2019re even a bit dated at this point. And yet\u2026they\u2019re inherently watchable. Mostly directed by <strong>Paul W.S. Anderson<\/strong> (he helmed films 1, 4, 5, and 6, while\u00a0<strong>Alexander Witt<\/strong> directed part 2 and\u00a0<strong>Russell Mulcahy<\/strong> directed part 3), these films are extremely loose adaptations of the video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> series that spawned them. Instead, they mostly serve as vehicles for Milla Jovovich, aka Mrs. Paul W.S. Anderson. Jovovich is the one consistent presence here, playing the main character Alice as she deals with the zombie apocalypse and the evil\u00a0 Umbrella Corporation. The first film is the most solid in the franchise, with Alice waking up with amnesia in a big, deadly mansion. From there, things get increasingly weirder and sillier. How silly? Let\u2019s just say that clones start to get involved. You want to turn away from all of this hot garbage, and yet you can\u2019t. This is true junk food cinema \u2013 movies loaded with empty calories that are probably very bad for you, and yet you keep shoveling them into your gaping maw. And you hate yourself while you do it, but you also feel so good at the same time. The case could be made that these movies don\u2019t\u00a0<em>deserve<\/em> a beautiful 4K package, but they got one all the same. Even if you haven\u2019t seen it you\u2019re likely aware of its legacy \u2013 a legacy that spawned sequels and remakes. Now, Ronin Flix has put together a curious little box set. It doesn\u2019t collect all the films \u2013 instead, it features the 1978 original and the 2018 direct sequel\u00a0<strong><em>I Spit On Your Grave: Deja Vu<\/em><\/strong>. It also comes with the documentary\u00a0<strong><em>Growing up with I Spit on Your Grave<\/em><\/strong>, in which\u00a0<strong>Terry Zarchi<\/strong>, son of\u00a0<em>I Spit On Your Grave<\/em> director\u00a0<strong>Meir Zarchi<\/strong>, chronicles both the making-of and the history of the film. And what are we to make of\u00a0<em>I Spit On Your Grave<\/em> these days? Is it a piece of icky, disgusting, sensationalism or is it a secretly feminist horror classic? Or is it all those things, and more? In the original, a writer (<strong>Camille Keaton<\/strong>) is sexually assaulted by a group of men and then takes bloody revenge. In\u00a0<em>Deja Vu<\/em>, that same writer (played again by Keaton) and her daughter (<strong>Jamie Bernadette<\/strong>) are hunted down by the family members of the slain men. The first film is effective in its nastiness, and whatever you think of it in the end, it lingers with you. The same can\u2019t be said for\u00a0<em>Deja Vu<\/em>, which takes an interesting premise \u2013 violence that begets violence that begets even more violence \u2013 and does nothing good with it. The box set itself is physically appealing, with great cover art and strong features, including\u00a0liner notes by horror writers Michael Gingold and \/Film contributor Meagan Navarro. But then you have to take into account the fact that\u00a0<em>Deja Vu<\/em> is a rather subpar sequel, and the original\u00a0<em>I Spit On Your Grave<\/em> is not going to be everyone\u2019s cup of tea. Plus there\u2019s not really a way you <em>can<\/em> rent this box set, so that takes rental off the table.
