\n The protracted legal battle between Hollywood\u2019s writers and its agents just got uglier.<\/p>\n

The executive director of the guild that represents Hollywood screenwriters has been accused of threatening to \u201ckill\u201d Rick Rosen, a top exec at Ari Emanuel\u2019s talent agency WME, during a testy phone call over writers\u2019 compensation, according to a new legal filing.<\/p>\n

WME revealed the accusation against the Writers Guild of America executive director David Young in court papers on Wednesday, asking a federal judge to intervene to force a settlement in the lengthy standoff between WME and WGA over the guild\u2019s new rules of engagement for agents.<\/p>\n

Rosen, head of WME\u2019s television department, said in papers filed in the US Central District of California on Tuesday that Young \u201crepeatedly threatened to \u2018kill\u2019 me during a phone call on August 11, 2020.\u201d<\/p>\n

After the call, Rosen testified in a written declaration that he called \u00a0WGAW\u2019s President David Goodman,\u201d noting that he had \u201ca good professional relationship\u201d with the labor boss.<\/p>\n

\u201cI informed Mr. Goodman of Mr. Young\u2019s threats to me,\u201d Rosen stated in the declaration taken on Tuesday. \u201cMr. Goodman responded \u2018Oh God,\u2019 which I interpreted to mean \u2018that\u2019s terrible\u2019 but \u2018it\u2019s unsurprising.\u2019 This to me underscores that such behavior by Mr. Young is both expected and condoned by the Guilds.\u201d<\/p>\n

The allegedly angry phone call, which Rosen characterized as \u201cirrational\u201d and \u201castounding,\u201d came after the exec send an internal memo to WME agents updating them on the breakdown in talks with WGA.<\/p>\n

A WGA rep denied that Young threatened Rosen, and said that both Young and Goodman declined to comment on the alleged incident.<\/p>\n

The rep added that both WME and its rival agency CAA are not looking to \u201cresolve their own conflicted practices\u201d amid the ongoing legal scuffle between the guild and the agencies over writers\u2019 compensation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWME and CAA will have the opportunity to get writers back when they return to the table \u2013 when they stop attacking us and take seriously the work of reforming their own deep-seated conflicts,\u201d Goodman said in a statement. \u201cMeritless court actions will not save them from that.\u201d<\/p>\n

The alleged death threats follow a drama-filled year and a half, in which the guild instructed its members, which include Tina Fey, Shonda RImes and Lena Waith,\u00a0 to fire their agents over what it deemed as unfair compensation.<\/p>\n

Over the course of the year, the guild convinced over 100 agencies, including bigger players like UTA and ICM, to sign their updated agreement, which put an end to \u201cpackaging,\u201d a practice that allows production companies to pay talent agencies a fee to bundle their talent together for a film or TV series<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The agreement also limited agencies to a 20 percent ownership stake in affiliated production companies. Both WME and CAA have production companies and have tried to negotiate with the WGA on ways to comply to the new rules.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, WME\u2019s lawyer Jeffrey Kessler asked the judge to stop the writers boycott as the standoff has harmed its business. CAA filed a similar motion on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Questioning the legality of the boycott, the lawyer said WME has \u201clost more than one thousand clients who have been coerced into terminating WME at the instruction of the Guilds, and once severed, these client relationships may never return.\u201d<\/p>\n

While a WGA rep acknowledged that talks with WME were \u201cproductive,\u201d he said that for a month, the agency has ignored \u201crepeated\u201d requests for \u201cadditional information on their corporate structure in order to provide them with such language.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
