“#Wonder Woman 1984 gets a Christmas debut on HBO Max<\/strong>”

\n WarnerMedia<\/a> today announced that its next big superhero movie,\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984<\/em>, will debut in global theaters on December 16. And if you live in an area where the theaters are still closed because of COVID, relax \u2014 the company is releasing the film on HBO Max exclusively for one month.<\/p>\n

For the first time ever, #WonderWoman1984<\/a> will release in theaters and stream exclusively on @HBOmax<\/a>* on December 25.<\/p>\n

To clarify, the film will debut in theaters in the US on December 25, and will arrive on HBO Max on the same day. In international markets, where HBO Max isn\u2019t available \u2014 and where, dare I suggest, COVID has been rendered a much less significant threat than it has in the US \u2014 the film will debut in theaters on December 16.<\/p>\n

The film will be available on HBO Max for the one-month window. Presumably it\u2019ll eventually be available again once an app<\/a>ropriate amount of time has passed.<\/p>\n

Both WarnerMedia and director Patty Jenkins have put this forward as an act of holiday generosity \u2014 Jenkins said on Twitter<\/a> that \u201cwe truly hope that our film brings a little bit of joy and reprieve to all of you this holiday season.\u201d WarnerMedia CEO Jason Kilar said in the company statement<\/a>, \u201cMany of us could use an uplifting story this holiday season.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And I<\/span>\u2018m certainly not going to look at the teeth of this particular gift horse. I want to see a new movie \u2014\u00a0any\u00a0<\/em>new movie \u2014 and I\u2019m pleased that I\u2019ll get\u00a0Wonder Woman 1984\u00a0<\/em>after so many delays.<\/p>\n

But make no mistake: the primary motivation here is to get back as much lost revenue as possible. Hollywood continues to struggle with the effects of the global pandemic. Film shoots everywhere have either shut down or taken\u00a0extra costly precautions to protect cast and crew. Major film releases have either been delayed \u2014 in the ever-dimming hope that things will go back to normal soon \u2014 or have been shuffled onto streaming services. Warner appears to be trying to have its cake and eat it too.<\/p>\n

The major films aren\u2019t making anyone any money just sitting on the shelves like this. The move to put it on HBO Max might be a bit risky, but no doubt Warner is hoping new subscriber fees might\u00a0equal what the studio would earn from theaters in a stricken area. Disney\u2019s already sacrificed films like\u00a0Onward<\/em> and\u00a0Soul\u00a0<\/em>on the altar of Disney+, and attempted a premium release with the live-action Mulan<\/em>. Warner got burned by the poor theatrical performance of\u00a0Tenet<\/em>, and I have no doubt it\u2019s trying something different to avoid replicating that. What\u2019s the definition of insanity, after all?<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
