\n LONDON \u2014 The emergencies chief of the World Health Organization confirmed Friday that the U.N. agency received genetic sequences from China involving Beijing\u2019s recent coronavirus outbreak and said it app<\/a>ears the virus was exported from Europe.<\/p>\n

At a press briefing on Friday, Dr. Michael Ryan noted that \u201cstrains and viruses have moved around the world\u201d throughout the virus pandemic and said the fact that a virus from Europe sparked China\u2019s latest outbreak did not mean the virus originated there.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat it\u2019s saying most likely is that the disease was probably imported from outside Beijing at some point,\u201d Ryan said, adding that \u201cestablishing when that happened and how long the chain of transmission is, is important.\u201d He said that many coronavirus strains spreading in New York could also be linked to Europe.<\/p>\n

Ryan said that analysis of the genetic sequences China provided so far suggests that the virus spread from other people \u2014 and does not suggest that it jumped to humans from animals.<\/p>\n

After the new coronavirus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late December, officials hypothesized that it likely jumped into people from animals at a wildlife market, although the species responsible has never been identified.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis coronavirus (in China\u2019s latest outbreak) looks very much like it\u2019s of human origin,\u201d Ryan said, calling for a detailed investigation to determine how the imported cases sparked such a large cluster.<\/p>\n

To date, Chinese officials have identified 158 cases in Beijing in the past week. Most, if not all,l have been linked to the city\u2019s largest wholesale food market, where thousands of people work.<\/p>\n

Ryan said it was essential to understand how the virus spread so quickly and what conditions in the market \u2014 included crowded workers, air conditioning and the presence of water \u2014 may have helped.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe environment itself may have facilitated the spread of disease, at least initially,\u201d he said. \u201cThat\u2019s we\u2019ve seen that in meatpacking plants,\u201d he said. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen that all over the world. So what is it about this environment that allows the disease to amplify that setting?\u201d<\/p>\n

WHO Director-General<\/a> Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said Friday that the pandemic is \u201caccelerating.\u201d He said more than 150,000 cases were reported to the U.N. health agency on Thursday, the biggest single-day total so far.<\/p>\n

Tedros warned countries not to relax their infection control measures too soon, though he recognized that many people have grown weary of lockdown restrictions and that governments are eager to jump start their nations\u2019 economies.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are in a new and dangerous phase,\u201d he said. \u201cThe virus is still spreading fast. It is still deadly and most people are still susceptible.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
