But the venerated Japanese animation studio, which has long stood in the shadow of co-founder\u00a0<strong>Hayao Miyazaki<\/strong>, even closing its doors when the animation legend \u201cretired\u201d in 2013, needs to innovate too.<\/p>\n<p>Ghibli has dabbled with 3D animation over the years, with Miyazaki using CG to animate the more intense sequences in\u00a0<em>Princess Mononoke<\/em> and even creating a CG short film in 2018,\u00a0<em>Boro the Caterpillar<\/em>. So a fully CG-animated feature film was only the next step for Studio Ghibli. But it wasn\u2019t Hayao Miyazaki who would direct Ghibli\u2019s first CG feature, but his son\u00a0<strong>Goro Miyazaki<\/strong>, with the upcoming\u00a0<em><strong>Aya and the Witch,\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>based on the novel by\u00a0<em>Howl\u2019s Moving Castle<\/em>\u00a0author\u00a0<strong>Diana Wynne Jones<\/strong>. So what could Ghibli\u2019s first fully CG-animated film look like? See for yourself with the first\u00a0<em>Aya and the Witch<\/em> images below.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Aya_and_the_Witch_Images\"><\/span>Aya and the Witch Images<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I have to say that these images (via Comic Natalie) aren\u2019t exactly what I expected to come from Studio Ghibli, which has only ever held the highest standard for its animation (mostly due to Miyazaki\u2019s famously meticulous process). There\u2019s a shiny gloss to the character designs that reminds me of the overly ornate style that is becoming popular in Chinese CG animation, but some of the details like the hair or the clothes, are almost too simple or flat. But it does seem like Goro Miyazaki is attempting to capture the classic Ghibli designs in 3D, with the exaggerated looks for villains and the simple, cherubic expressions of the child protagonists.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless, I\u2019m anticipating Goro Miyazaki experimenting with his own style, after working for so long under the shadow of his famous father. His first two films,\u00a0<em>The Wizard of Earthsea<\/em> and\u00a0<em>From Up on Poppy Hill<\/em> felt like they owed too much stylistically and thematically to Miyazaki\u2019s beloved films, but\u00a0<em>From Up on Poppy Hill<\/em>\u00a0did feel like Goro Miyazaki was making efforts to make his own mark, with a film that felt a little quieter and light-hearted than typical Ghibli fare. Perhaps by leading the charge to adopt CG animation for Ghibli, Goro Miyazaki can finally establish himself as a promising director in his own right.<\/p>\n<p>Goro Miyazaki is adapting\u00a0Diana Wynne Jones\u2019 2011 children\u2019s novel\u00a0<em>Earwig and the Witch<\/em>, presumably renamed\u00a0<em>Aya and the Witch<\/em> for Japanese audiences, which is his second adaptation following\u00a0<em>The Wizard of Earthsea<\/em>, a dramatically different take on Ursula LeGuin\u2019s\u00a0<em>Earthsea<\/em> novels.\u00a0Here\u2019s the book\u2019s\u00a0synopsis,\u00a0though the final film will likely be very different:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Not every orphan would love living at St. Morwald\u2019s Home for Children, but Earwig does. She gets whatever she wants, whenever she wants it, and it\u2019s been that way since she was dropped on the orphanage doorstep as a baby. But all that changes the day Bella Yaga and the Mandrake come to St. Morwald\u2019s, disguised as foster parents. Earwig is whisked off to their mysterious house full of invisible rooms, potions, and spell books, with magic around every corner. Most children would run in terror from a house like that\u2026 but not Earwig.
