“#Cowboy Bebop Live-Action Gren Will Officially Be Nonbinary \u2013 \/Film<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

In the\u00a0Cowboy Bebop<\/em> <\/strong>anime<\/a>,\u00a0Grencia Mars Elijah Guo Eckener, nicknamed Gren<\/strong>, was always a character for whom gender was\u2026let\u2019s say, fluid. Basically \u2014 in a very anime<\/em> twist on things \u2014 an experimental drug causes Gren to grow breasts. Despite the strangeness of Gren\u2019s origins, the character would become informally recognized as an LGBTQ icon in anime. And the Netflix live-action series<\/a> is taking it one step further: officially making the\u00a0live-action Gren a nonbinary character.<\/p>\n

Netflix revealed that nonbinary actor\u00a0Mason Alexander Park<\/strong>, who starred in the National Broadway Tour of\u00a0Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/em>, has been cast as Gren in the\u00a0Cowboy Bebop<\/em> live-action series, and will officially play Gren as a nonbinary character who uses they\/them pronouns.

In the anime, Gren was a\u00a0veteran of the Titan War who played saxophone at the club known as the Rooster House. Park\u2019s portrayal of the character runs the front of the house for Ana\u2019s jazz club, and describes their version as \u201ccapable with their wit as a glock, as confident in a dress as a suit, they are a Bowie-esque embodiment of 22nd century handsome and seductive beauty.\u201d<\/p>\n

This is a nice update from Netflix on the anime, which is a medium that always played fast and loose with gender identity and sexuality anyways. (I can think of at least two animes where male characters are frequently turned into women, and vice versa \u2014 though usually for comedic effect.) But labeling Gren and cementing their LGBTQ status is a sensitive way of updating a character that existed in a kind of grey area until now.
\nIn the above video, Park calls Gren\u00a0their favorite character from the anime and \u201ca sexy nonbinary icon.\u201d \u201cBeing a nonbinary actor who is given the opportunity to breathe new life into an existing nonbinary character has been the thrill of a lifetime,\u201d they said in a video. \u201cIt\u2019s remarkably meaningful to me because I didn\u2019t grow up with a lot of gender-variant representation in the media<\/a>. There weren\u2019t a lot of other characters that spoke to my experience with gender or my experience with queerness, and representation matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also joining the cast of\u00a0Cowboy Bebop <\/em>are Tamara Tunie as Ana, the \u201ccool and intense\u201d owner of \u201cthe hottest underground bluesy jazz club on Mars\u201d;\u00a0Geoff Stults (Little Fires Everywhere<\/em>) as Chalmers, Jet Black\u2019s (Mustafa Shakir) former co-detective in the ISSP\u2019s Homicide Division; Rachel House (Thor: Ragnarok<\/em>) as Mao, the Capo of the Syndicate\u2019s White Tigers family; and Ann Truong (Strikeback!<\/em>) and Hoa Xuande (Top of the Lake<\/em>) as Shin & Lin, the twin Syndicate henchmen of hitman Vicious (Alex Hassell).<\/p>\n

Cowboy Bebop<\/em> recently restarted production after star\u00a0John Cho<\/strong>, who plays the ultra-cool bounty hunter Spike Siegel, sustained a knee injury. Andr\u00e9 Nemec and Jeff Pinkner serve as showrunners on the series.<\/p>\n
