And when I say \u2018me,\u2019 I do mean me, but I also mean people like me,\u201d <strong>Viola Davis<\/strong> says in the trailer for\u00a0<strong><em>Giving Voice<\/em><\/strong>, an upcoming documentary that honors the legacy of iconic Black playwright <strong>August Wilson<\/strong>, whose plays like\u00a0<em>Fences<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em> left an indelible mark on Black history. And Davis, who won an Oscar for her performance in the feature adaptation of\u00a0<em>Fences<\/em> and is earning buzz for her turn in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of\u00a0<em>Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>, is now using her platform to make sure that Wilson\u2019s legacy lives on in young Black students across the country, who are at the center of this documentary. Stern and Fernando Villena, <em>Giving Voice<\/em>\u00a0had its world premiere at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Sundance Favorite Award, earning it Netflix\u2019s attention and money. The streamer acquired the documentary, which pairs nicely with its upcoming release of the highly anticipated\u00a0<em>Ma Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom<\/em>, a feature adaptation of Wilson\u2019s play directed by\u00a0George C. Wolfe and starring Davis as well as <strong>Chadwick Boseman<\/strong> in his final feature role.<\/p>\n<p>The documentary is a rousing tribute to Wilson through the lens of a\u00a0yearly August Wilson monologue competition, in which thousands of high\u00a0school students enter for the chance to perform on Broadway \u2014 a connection which Davis cherishes, having gotten her breakthrough on the Great White Way in the 2001 Broadway production of Wilson\u2019s <em>King Hedley II<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Giving Voice<\/em>\u00a0features the song \u201cNever Break\u201d from John Legend, and is\u00a0produced by James D. Stern, Karen Bove, Fernando Villena, Schoen Smith, and Craig Piligian. Its executive producers include Davis, Julius Tennon, John Legend, Mike Jackson, Ty Stiklorius Dan Cogan, Jenny Raskin, Geralyn White Dreyfous, Gretchen Stockdale, Nicholas Caprio, and Constanza Romero.<\/p>\n<p>Here is the synopsis for\u00a0<em>Giving Voice<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A new generation of performers is discovered in \u201cGiving Voice,\u201d which follows the emotional journey of six students as they advance through the high-stakes August Wilson Monologue Competition, an event which celebrates one of America\u2019s preeminent playwrights. Every year, thousands of students from twelve cities across the United States perform the Pulitzer Prize winner\u2019s work (\u201cFences,\u201d \u201cMa Rainey\u2019s Black Bottom\u201d) for a shot to perform on Broadway. Directors Jim Stern and Fernando Villena capture students discovering themselves and the world around them through Wilson\u2019s \u201cCentury Cycle,\u201d a canon of ten plays portraying the 20th century African American experience.
