\n Philip J. Smith, chairman and CEO of Broadway\u2019s biggest landlord, is retiring.<\/p>\n

Smith, 88, has been the head of the mighty Shubert Organization, which owns and operates 17 Broadway theaters and six off-Broadway venues, since 2008 and has been with the company for more than six decades.<\/p>\n

While Smith will take on an emeritus role, co-CEO Robert Wankel will ascend to the top spot.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe retirement of Phil Smith is a pivotal moment not only in the history of the Shubert Organization but also in the history of the American theatre,\u201d Wankel said. \u201cI salute him as a giant of the American theatre and a most beloved member of the Shubert family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith added: \u201cThe decision to retire feels exactly right at this time in my life.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe current COVID-19 crisis has pushed the business of Broadway into uncharted territory. It seems an app<\/a>ropriate time for me to step down and turn over my leadership responsibilities to my friend and colleague, Bob Wankel.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Shubert Organization\u2019s current and upcoming productions \u2014 including \u201cThe Music Man\u201d starring Hugh Jackman, \u201cWest Side Story,\u201d \u201cCompany\u201d and \u201cDiana\u201d \u2014 are temporarily shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
