\n Susan Kelechi Watson is between two worlds.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s currently pulling double-duty starring as Beth Pearson on NBC\u2019s \u201cThis Is Us\u201d (Tuesdays at 9 p.m.) and she\u2019s producing and starring in HBO\u2019s \u201cBetween the World and Me,\u201d based on the 2015 book<\/a> by Ta-Nehisi Coates.<\/p>\n

Premiering Nov. 21 (8 p.m.), \u201cBetween the World and Me\u201d is a special that combines readings from Coates\u2019 bestselling nonfiction book \u2014 which is about the African American experience and addressed to his teenage son \u2014 with its 2018 stage rendition at the Apollo Theater.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main thing was, how do we re-imagine it as something that would be streamed rather than on a stage?\u201d Watson, 38, tells The Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd to use this time that we\u2019re in of being distanced from one another \u2026 to create story. A lot of our filming selected the intimacy of what it would be just to talk to someone that you love, and speak these words from this book as though you\u2019re speaking to another family member, in the same way that Ta-Nehisi did in his book.\u201d<\/p>\n

The special mixes animation, archival footage of Coates\u2019 home life and history, and a star-studded cast speaking directly into the camera, including Oprah Winfrey, Mahershala Ali, Angela Bassett, Angela Davis, Wendell Pierce and more.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were over the moon every time somebody said yes, and quite frankly they were not difficult \u2018Yeses,\u2019\u201d says Watson. \u201cPeople were excited to lend their voice to this and be part of this. Thankfully we could shoot people\u2019s parts out in a day. So it wasn\u2019t a huge time commitment and it was really fun and a joy for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

Watson herself app<\/a>ears onscreen narrating a part about Howard University and its significance in African American culture \u2014 which is her alma mater as well as Coates\u2019 (though the two did not overlap as students).<\/p>\n

\u201cTa-Nehisi felt strongly about my doing that role because it was authentic for me, so I had a ball doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBetween the World and Me\u201d also includes events that happened after the book\u2019s publication, such as the surge of the Black Lives Matter movement this summer.<\/p>\n

\u201cOnce [the killings of] Ahmaud Arbery happened and Breonna Taylor and George Floyd, and we\u2019re in the midst of a pandemic, we were looking for a way to express our grief and what we were going through,\u201d says Watson. \u201cWe wanted to continue this intense conversation on race \u2014 and not only continue it but make change. Ta-Nehisi\u2019s book so eloquently talks about what it is to be black in America. [The special] felt like the best way for us to express it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on \u201cThis Is Us,\u201d Beth\u2019s story is heating up, thanks to the bombshell revelation that her husband Randall\u2019s (Sterling K. Brown) birth mother wasn\u2019t as deceased as everyone thought.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to get to a place in our household where there are no more surprises and we can chill out for a while and Randall can regulate his anxiety\u2026 and so the surprise that we see that his mom woke up where he thought her story had ended is sort of big,\u201d says Watson.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll see how it unfolds, but I guarantee that it\u2019s interesting. Regardless, [Beth] always has his back. So whatever they go through, they do it together and are as supportive of each other as they can be \u2014 which is what we love so much about their relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n
