\n Bids for Simon & Schuster are due next week, and there are reportedly three suitors still in the race: News<\/a> Corp, Bertelsmann and \u00adVivendi.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, News Corp CEO Robert Thomson is warning of anti\u00adtrust concerns if Bertelsmann \u2014 already the world\u2019s largest publisher thanks to ownership of Penguin Random House in the US \u2014 were to take the lead.<\/p>\n

Thomson said he would not discuss what he called \u201cspeculation and scuttlebutt\u201d on News Corp\u2019s reported interest during the company\u2019s shareholder meeting on Wednesday. News Corp owns The New York Post.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I would make one observation about Simon & Schuster,\u201d he said. \u201cIt will clearly be a serious anti\u00adtrust issue if Bertels\u00admann acquires Simon & Schuster.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever cute and clever the structure, if Bertelsmann is their beneficiary, it will be a book behemoth. And this will certainly be a profound antitrust issue for the entire book industry and, no doubt, for authors around the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bertelsmann CEO Thomas Rabe has confirmed his interest in buying Simon & Schuster and said he did not feel there would be anti-trust issues.<\/p>\n

Although S&S owner Viacom\u00adCBS was initially said to be looking for $1.2 billion, according to a report in The New York Times this week, one suitor has already indicated it would bid $1.7 billion.<\/p>\n

Sources have confirmed that bids are due before Thanksgiving.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
