“#National Book Award wins for \u2018Interior Chinatown,\u2019 Malcolm X bio<\/strong>”

\n Diversity was very much the dominant theme<\/a> of the first-ever virtual National Book Awards Wednesday night with Walter Mosley being granted the lifetime achievement award and the individual book wins dominated by minority authors.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is our night,\u201d quipped \u201cAll American Boys<\/a>\u201d author Jason Reynolds, who hosted the event from Washington D.C.<\/p>\n

The closely watched award for fiction went to Charles Yu\u2019s satiric novel \u201cInterior Chinatown,\u201d about a young actor who yearns to be the \u201cKung Fu guy\u201d in films, but instead is given minor stereotypical roles such as pizza delivery guy. The novel was written in the form of a screenplay.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy turns hilarious and flat-out heartbreaking, Charles Yu\u2019s \u2018Interior Chinatown<\/a>\u2018 is a bright, bold, gut punch of a novel,\u201d said the judges\u2019 statement.<\/p>\n

Yu, accepting the award on camera, appeared stunned.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can\u2019t feel anything in my body right now. I prepared nothing, which tells you about how realistic I thought this was,\u201d he said. \u201cI will probably just stop talking now,\u201d he concluded. \u201cI\u2019m going to go melt into a puddle right now.\u201d<\/p>\n

The top prize for nonfiction went to the late News<\/a>day columnist and editor\u00a0 Les Payne and his daughter Tamara for \u201cThe Dead Are Arising: The Life of Malcolm X<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI wish my father was here to accept this award,\u201d she said. He died in 2018.<\/p>\n

Don Mee Choi\u2019s \u201cDMZ Colony<\/a>\u201d won the poetry prize; Yu Miri\u2019s \u201cTokyo Ueno Station,\u201d translated from Japanese by Morgan Giles, won the translated literature prize; Giles spent three years translating and it was her major translation.\u00a0 \u201cThank you for letting me translate your beautiful novel,\u201d Giles said to Miri, who also appeared on camera.<\/p>\n

Kacen Callender\u2019s \u201cKing and the Dragonflies<\/a>\u201d won the young people\u2019s literature prize.\u00a0 \u201cAs an author, I always try to balance between pain, hope and joy,\u201d Callender said.<\/p>\n

Walter Mosley, author of \u201cThe Devil in a Blue Dress<\/a>\u201d and other tomes in a lifetime of writing over 60 fiction and nonfiction books, was given the Medal for Distinguished Contributions to American Letters and struck a somber note.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople darker than blue built this country brick-by-brick,\u201d said Mosley,\u00a0 \u201cWe were here when it started and we\u2019ll be here when it ends.\u201d He was the first black man to receive the award.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a great weight hanging over the reception of an award when the underlying subject is the first black man to receive it,\u201d Mosley said. \u201cI prefer to believe that we are on the threshold of a new day, that this evening is but one of 10,000 steps being taken to recognize the potential of this nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The event ran video of the late Congressman John Lewis who was given the Young Adult in literature award in 2016 and recalled that when he was a kid, he could not get a library card because he was black.<\/p>\n

It then ran a video in support of\u00a0 Black Lives Matter, narrated by last year\u2019s Book Awards host LeVar Burton.<\/p>\n

The Foundation\u2019s executive director Lisa Lucas is one of several black executives recruited to head publishing imprints in recent months. She\u2019ll become publisher in January of Pantheon and Schocken imprints at Penguin Random House. \u201cWe\u2019re capable of imagining the solutions to unprecedented problems,\u201d she said of the literary world, speaking from the children\u2019s book section from a library in Los Angeles. \u201cWe can do much better.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carolyn Reidy, the late CEO of Simon & Schuster, was given posthumously the Literarian Award for Outstanding Service to the American Literary Community, which was accepted by her husband Stephen Reidy.<\/p>\n

Many of her authors spoke of her contributions. \u201cShe knew about something larger than herself,\u201d said Walter Isaacson, a long time S&S author who wrote the bestselling Steve\u00a0 Jobs bio. \u201cShe knew the most basic concept that we\u2019re here for a short while and we have to\u00a0 make it about something\u00a0 larger\u00a0 than ourselves.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
