The best way to stay on top of emails is to address them as they come in. On Android, Gmail notifications give you two options: \u201cArchive\u201d and \u201cReply.\u201d We\u2019ll show you how to add a \u201cMark as Read\u201d option, too.<\/p>\n

\u201cArchive\u201d and \u201cReply\u201d are useful, but marking an email as read also really comes in handy. There are many times when you can\u2019t reply to an email right away, but want to save it in your Inbox so you can answer it later. The ability to do this from the notification is also a big time-saver.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Gmail does allow you to choose if you want the second option to be \u201cArchive\u201d or \u201cDelete,\u201d but that\u2019s where the customization ends. To add \u201cRead,\u201d we\u2019re using a paid app<\/a> called AutoNotification<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The app intercepts Gmail notifications, replicates them, and adds a \u201cRead\u201d option. However, this is only possible if you allow the app to read your emails. This is a privacy trade-off you\u2019ll have to decide if you\u2019re comfortable with.<\/p>\n

To get started, download AutoNotification from the Google Play Store on your Android phone or tablet.<\/p>\n

\"Click<\/p>\n

When you first open the app, you have to grant it permission to access the photos, media<\/a>, and files on your device; tap \u201cAllow.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll see an introduction explaining what the app can do. Use the Back gesture or button to close this message.<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Next, tap \u201cGmail Buttons.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

Tap \u201cAdd Account\u201d to link your Google account to AutoNotification.<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

A warning appears letting you know the notification intercept service isn\u2019t running. This is how the app detects Gmail notifications, so tap \u201cOK\u201d to enable it.<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be redirected to Android\u2019s \u201cNotification Access\u201d settings; tap \u201cAutoNotification.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

Toggle-On the \u201cAllow Notification Access\u201d option.<\/p>\n

\"Toggle-On<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re comfortable with what the app will be able to access, tap \u201cAllow\u201d in the confirmation pop-up message.<\/p>\n

Tap the back arrows at the top left until you\u2019re back on the \u201cGmail Buttons\u201d menu in the AutoNotification app. Tap \u201cAdd Account\u201d once again.<\/p>\n

Another warning will appear, explaining that this feature won\u2019t work with emails that contain labels. Tap \u201cOK\u201d to continue.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s where the cost comes in. You can tap \u201cStart Trial\u201d for a free seven-day trial to see if you like the app, or you can pay a one-time fee of 99 cents to unlock it forever.<\/p>\n

After you start the trial or unlock the feature, you\u2019ll be asked to agree to the privacy policy. Tap \u201cRead Policy,\u201d and then tap \u201cAgree\u201d whenever you\u2019re ready.<\/p>\n

Finally, the \u201cChoose an Account\u201d window will appear. Select the Google account to which you want to add the \u201cRead\u201d option.<\/p>\n

\"Select<\/p>\n

Tap \u201cAllow\u201d to grant AutoNotification permission to \u201cView Your Email Messages and Settings\u201d and \u201cView and Modify But Not Delete Your Email.\u201d This is how the app replicates your Gmail notifications.<\/p>\n

Tap \u201cAllow\u201d in the pop-up message to confirm.<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll then receive some Google Security Alerts about AutoNotification having access to your Google account\u2014these are normal.<\/p>\n

\"A<\/p>\n

The \u201cRead\u201d option will now be present in your Gmail notifications! You can stop here if you\u2019re satisfied.<\/p>\n

\"Tap<\/p>\n

\u201cRead\u201d isn\u2019t the only button you can add. To see more options, head back to the \u201cGmail Buttons\u201d section in the AutoNotification app, and then tap \u201cButtons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Select the checkbox next to any option you want to add to your Gmail notifications.<\/p>\n

\"Select<\/p>\n

With these new options, your Inbox will never be out of control again!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
