“#’fossil galaxy’ discovered within Milky Way<\/strong>”

\n Ten billion years ago, another galaxy slammed into the Milky Way.<\/p>\n

But it has taken until now for astronomers to discover the massive, \u201cfossil galaxy\u201d still in our midst, according to a report in the Independent<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Researchers at the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment project (APOGEE) announced the discovery on Friday, the Independent reports.<\/p>\n

They\u2019ve dubbed the fossil galaxy \u201cHercules,\u201d and they say that its stars were discovered within the Milky Way\u2019s \u201cHalo,\u201d the cloud of stars furthest from our galaxy\u2019s brighter center.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is really small in the cosmological context \u2013 only 100 million stars,\u201d Dr. Ricardo Schiavon said of the remnants of Hercules.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut it accounts for almost half the mass of the entire Milky Way halo,\u201d added Schiavon, a scientist with the Liverpool John Moores University\u2019s Astrophysics Research Institute.<\/p>\n

Dr.Schiavon and his team could tell the stars of the Milky Way and Hercules apart due to their different chemical composition and velocity.<\/p>\n

\u201cAPOGEE lets us pierce through that dust and see deeper into the heart of the Milky Way than ever before,\u201d Dr. Schiavon said.<\/p>\n

Based on the scientific data, the researchers have concluded that the collision of both galaxies \u201cmust have been a major event in the history of our galaxy,\u201d Schiavon said.<\/p>\n

The researchers also stated that this incident makes the Milky Way unusual because other \u201cspiral galaxies had much calmer early lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

As our cosmic home, the Milky Way is already special to us, but this ancient galaxy buried within makes it even more special,\u201d Dr.Schiavon said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
