that has exceeded 150% so far in 2020. <\/p>\n<p>So why does the asset, based on the distributed-ledger <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>, suddenly appear ready to surpass its 2017 peak at $19,783? <\/p>\n<p>There are a few key reasons: <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Scarcity_factor\"><\/span>Scarcity factor<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Bitcoin was created in 2009 and as a part of its creation by a person, or persons, using the name Satoshi Nakamoto, who embedded a limit of 21 million coins in the original bitcoin code. That means only 21 million bitcoin can ever exist. Currently, 18.5 million are in circulation, or nearly 90% of that total. <\/p>\n<p>Bitcoins are digitally mined by those who expend outsize sums of computer power to solve puzzles and who are rewarded with coins in exchange for verifying transactions on the anonymous blockchain network. <\/p>\n<p>Nakamoto designed the coins to be harder to get as the network gets closer to the maximum float. It\u2019s estimated that it will take 120 years to \u201cmine\u201d the remaining 10% of bitcoins needed to get to the 21 million limit.  <\/p>\n<p>The perceived scarcity, or supply limit, of an asset doesn\u2019t magically confer value to it. But the belief that there will be fewer opportunities to obtain bitcoin, or that it will reside in the hands of a select few, is often cited as a reason that demand for bitcoins has returned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Familiarity_breeds%E2%80%A6buying\"><\/span>Familiarity breeds\u2026buying?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Bitcoin doesn\u2019t have the cachet or tradition of other assets that have been around for much longer, including gold, which boasts a history stretching back thousands of years as a store of value and medium of exchange. <\/p>\n<p>However, bitcoin\u2019s popularity has been growing among average folks and institutional investors alike, supporters say. <\/p>\n<p>Bitcoin as a so-called uncorrelated asset, one not directly linked to price swings in, say, gold, bonds, or the Dow Jones Industrial Average<br \/>\n        DJIA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598065\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.74%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       or S&amp;P 500 index<br \/>\n        SPX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210599714\/realtime\" class=\"negative\">-0.67%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       has led to some buying of bitcoin as a financial hedge. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDerivatives have taken a robust role in these markets, aiding the product variety available for active traders to advance their understanding of market dynamics and core risk management,\u201d Catherine Coley, CEO of Binance U.S., one of the world\u2019s largest crypto exchanges, told MarketWatch in an emailed exchange. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_rise_of_stablecoins\"><\/span>The rise of stablecoins <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Another factor tied to familiarity is the emergence of stablecoins, or those cryptocurrencies that are usually pegged to a fiat currency, like the dollar<br \/>\n        DXY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598269\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.11%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       or the euro<br \/>\n        EURUSD,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210561242\/realtime\/sampled\" class=\"positive\">+0.01%<\/bg-quote><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n       These coins don\u2019t have nearly the volatility that is associated with a generic cryptocurrency because of their peg to a traditional currency that often underpins it. <\/p>\n<p> Stablecoins have become a major source of liquidity in cryptocurrency markets, experts say. <\/p>\n<p>Such coins backed by governments or corporate groups also have conferred the air of legitimacy of the digital-currency sector, with the Federal Reserve exploring the possibility of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-usa-fed-brainard\/fedcoin-the-us-central-bank-is-looking-into-it-idUSKBN1ZZ2XF\" class=\"icon none\">issuing its own digital currency<\/a>, amid reports that China is moving forward with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/10\/12\/china-digital-currency-trial-over-1-million-handed-out-in-lottery.html#:~:text=China%20has%20been%20pushing%20toward,like%20Alipay%20or%20WeChat%20Pay.\" class=\"icon none\">a digital yuan<\/a>. The second-largest economy in the world launched a trial of a digital currency last month,\u00a0according to reports. <\/p>\n<p>The U.K. is also pushing the idea of a stablecoin for its central bank, according to a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/chancellor-sets-out-ambition-for-future-of-uk-financial-services\" class=\"icon none\">statement from <\/a>Chancellor of the Exchequer <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/chancellor-sets-out-ambition-for-future-of-uk-financial-services\" class=\"icon none\">Rishi Sunak<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>Among major institutions, JPMorgan Chase &amp; Co.<br \/>\n        JPM,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205971034\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.85%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       launched an interbank payment systems using their own blockchain-based technologies to create a dollar-pegged digital asset <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/jpmorgan-microsoft-team-up-on-blockchain-11556825907\" class=\"icon none\">called JPM coin<\/a>. <\/p>\n<h6><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fall_of_the_buck_and_gold_rivalry\"><\/span>Fall of the buck and gold rivalry<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h6>\n<p>Worries that governments are printing heaps of money to paper over problems created partly by the 2008 financial crisis was at least part of the reason that bitcoins were created over a decade ago. That thinking is also the basis for this resurgence in bitcoin, crypto experts said, as the COVID-19 pandemic forces governments and central banks to spend to limit the economic hit. <\/p>\n<p>The dollar is down 4.2% so far in 2020, as measured by the ICE U.S. Dollar Index<br \/>\n        DXY,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598269\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.11%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       a gauge of the buck against a half-dozen currencies, including the euro. PayPal\u2019s decision last month was a further recognition of the legitimacy of digital currencies, crypto enthusiasts say. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cToday bitcoin has gotten to a place where institutional investors, banks, and family offices are legitimately pondering involvement as a defense against currency devaluation,\u201d wrote Alex Mashinsky, CEO of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/celsius.network\/\" class=\"icon none\">Celsius Network<\/a>, in emailed commentary. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cThis isn\u2019t a gold rush anymore, it\u2019s a good investment,\u201d he said.
