It\u2019s thrown a lot of users for a loop, but you can get the old Free Transform behavior back. Here\u2019s how.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Free_Transform_Used_to_Work\"><\/span>How Free Transform Used to Work<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>First, a quick recap: Free Transform is the tool that enables you to resize and reshape any layer, shape, path, text, mask, object, or anything else.<\/p>\n<p>With an unlocked layer selected, you access it by going to Edit &gt; Free Transform, or with the keyboard shortcut Control+T (Command+T on a Mac.) This brings up a box with eight handles that surrounds the layer or object.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_700403\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-700403 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/x1freetransform.png.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.VSy3XGb75g.png\" alt=\"free transform active around a purple circle\" width=\"650\" height=\"329\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">This is what Free Transform looks like.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here\u2019s how Free Transform used to work: To reshape or resize the object, you\u2019d click-and-drag on one of the handles. In other words, dragging one handle would cause the opposite handle to move as well basically resizing the object in place. (You could also click and move the reference point to change where the center of transformation was). \u201cShift\u201d locked the proportions of the transformation. Well, free transform is arguably simpler for new users: It works much the same but the proportions are locked by default and, instead, you hold down \u201cShift\u201d to distort things. It\u2019s easier to get right the first time, but it\u2019s a total pain for anyone who has the Shift-to-lock keyboard shortcut firmly ingrained in their muscle memory.<\/p>\n<p>Also, by default, the reference point is now hidden. This means \u201cAlt\u201d (or \u201cOption\u201d) only resizes around the center rather than where you placed the reference point.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Restore_Free_Transforms_Classic_Behavior\"><\/span>How to Restore Free Transform\u2019s Classic Behavior<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that bringing back Photoshop\u2019s old behavior is simple.<\/p>\n<p>To do so on Windows, click Edit &gt; Preferences &gt; <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>. On a Mac, click Photoshop &gt; Preferences &gt; General.<\/p>\n<p>Under Options, toggle \u201cUse Legacy Free Transform\u201d on. Now, pressing \u201cShift\u201d will lock the transformation rather than unlock it.
