\n Next time you go see \u201cThe Phantom of the Opera,\u201d if British officials have their way, you might listen to the small-talk<\/em> of the night.<\/p>\n

Andrew Lloyd Webber told BBC Radio 4 Friday that a government official bizarrely suggested that West End musicals come back \u201cwithout any singing\u201d to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to be in the report on theater that\u2019s coming out on Monday,\u201d the Tony-winning composer, 72, said of next week\u2019s announcement. \u201cBut I sincerely hope it doesn\u2019t contain some of the things that I\u2019ve seen in some of their advice \u2014 one of which was a brilliant one for musicals: that you\u2019re not allowed to sing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Group singing is considered by many scientists to be a dangerous activity, due to the large amount of heavy breathing and potentially infectious droplets it can cause.<\/p>\n

Knowing this, Lloyd Webber also revealed he plans to test out an antiviral fog machine and thermal imaging scanner, to sense audience members with high temperatures, at the London Palladium where his classic musical \u201cJoseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat\u201d would have been performed this summer. The technologies have proven safe and successful for a South Korean production of \u201cPhantom.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I hope to do is to demonstrate to the British government what has happ<\/a>ened in Korea at the London Palladium, hopefully in the first week of July,\u201d he told the program.<\/p>\n

But London\u2019s showman, producer Michael Harrison, tells The Post that his popular \u201cJoseph\u201d revival, starring Jac Yarrow and Jason Donovan, is ready to return to the Palladium in summer 2021, full-steam ahead.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the show people will need after this,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

Harrison also did not rule out the return of his raucous annual Christmas pantomime at the 2,300-seat Palladium in December.<\/p>\n

In venting his frustrations, Lloyd Webber joins many British theater professionals who are pressuring the government for increased support during a difficult moment for their industry.<\/p>\n

Producer Cameron Mackintosh said that all of his shows \u2014 \u201cPhantom,\u201d \u201cMary Poppins,\u201d \u201cHamilton\u201d and \u201cLes Miserables\u201d \u2014 would not reopen until 2021. And \u201cHarry Potter\u201d producer Sonia Friedman wrote in the Telegraph in May that the British theater was on the \u201cbrink of total collapse.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
