\n Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday that middle-aged adults are starting to account for a \u201csubstantial\u201d number of COVID-19 hospitalizations.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re starting to see that there\u2019s a substantial proportion of people who are hospitalized between 40 and 59,\u201d Fauci said on CBS\u2019 \u201cFace the Nation.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases stressed that it\u2019s \u201cnot just elderly individuals\u201d and people with underlying health issues who are currently hospitalized for the virus.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo these are people who are predominantly dominated by the elderly and underlying conditions, but not completely,\u201d Fauci said of the 83,000 patients being treated in hospitals across the nation.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese numbers really speak for themselves. We\u2019re in a very, very difficult situation at all levels.\u201d<\/p>\n

Fauci noted that new cases are surging across the nation, meaning the curve is \u201creally very, very steep.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s going up at a very rapid rate. And you looked at almost every single day, in fact, gives you another record,\u201d Fauci said.<\/p>\n

But he urged Americans to double down on safety measures, even if they\u2019re experiencing \u201cCOVID fatigue\u201d \u2014 noting that \u201cvaccines are coming and they\u2019re going to be available relatively soon.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou don\u2019t want people to get terrified, but you want them to understand that we can do something about that by mitigation methods,\u201d Fauci said. \u201cAnd also help is on the way. So, we should not look upon this as a hopeless situation.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
