\n The Justin Bieber show opened the 2020 American Music Awards<\/a> on Sunday night.<\/p>\n

In a big comeback year that started with his \u201cChanges\u201d album released in February, Biebs \u2014 making his first app<\/a>earance at the AMAs since 2016 \u2014 got the prime spot to introduce the show, held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n

But in the middle of a pandemic with coronavirus cases surging \u2014 and folks who can\u2019t see their families for Thanksgiving as a result \u2014 did we really need to hear Bieber whining about the price of young fame in \u201cLonely\u201d at the beginning of the night?<\/p>\n

And then after performing his gospel-charged single \u201cHoly\u201d with a troupe of mask-wearing dancers, Bieber was joined by Shawn Mendes \u2014 at 22, four years JB\u2019s junior \u2014 for their brand-new duet \u201cMonster.\u201d Here, we got another song that found these privileged pop heartthrobs complaining about the weight of being \u201cput on a pedestal\u201d because of their success at an early age.<\/p>\n

Can you say tone deaf<\/em>?<\/p>\n

Luckily, host Taraji P. Henson quickly erased that memory with a shimmying dance routine that started with her best Diana Ross-as-Dorothy moves to \u201cBrand New Day\u201d from \u201cThe Wiz.\u201d She kept up her high-energy hoofing with Prince\u2019s \u201cLet\u2019s Go Crazy\u201d and Jay-Z\u2019s \u201cDirt on Your Shoulder\u201d before ending with a couple of 2020 bangers: Megan Thee Stallion\u2019s \u201cSavage\u201d and her \u201cWAP\u201d smash with Cardi B.<\/p>\n

Of course, one of the most-anticipated moments of the night was when Megan Thee Stallion \u2014 the hot-girl rapper of the moment \u2014 took the stage just two days after her debut album, \u201cGood News<\/a>,\u201d finally dropped. After skipping the MTV VMAs in August, this was Megan\u2019s first major awards-show moment since the BET Awards in June, and she delivered a bootylicious performance of her new self-love single \u201cBody.\u201d<\/p>\n

While she appeared to be lip-syncing for much of it \u2014 as is fairly common at the AMAs \u2014 she owned the stage with body-positive panache.<\/p>\n

With decidedly more clothes on, Billie Eilish \u2014 another hot female artist who passed on the VMAs \u2014 turned up to give a cred boost to the AMAs with the first TV performance of her new single \u201cTherefore I Am.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although 33 years older than Eilish, another fierce female \u2014 Jennifer Lopez<\/a> \u2014 continued her 2020 roll after her Super Bowl halftime show that started the year. J.Lo teamed up with Maluma \u2014 her costar in the upcoming romantic comedy \u201cMarry Me\u201d \u2014 for a performance of their new singles \u201cPa Ti\u201d and \u201cLonely.\u201d<\/p>\n

The songs themselves may be pretty tepid, but the heat generated by Lopez \u2014\u00a0rocking a black body suit as she continues to defy Father Time at 51 \u2014 and the Colombian reggaeton star was enough to make Alex Rodriguez muy<\/em> jealous. Let\u2019s just say there was negative social distancing happening at one point.<\/p>\n

Other performers at the awards included the Weeknd<\/a>, Katy Perry, Dua Lipa, BTS, Machine Gun Kelly and Mendes (again), who got to have the solo spotlight with his single \u201cWonder\u201d from his upcoming album of the same name, due Dec. 4.<\/p>\n

Oh, and yeah, there were awards handed out too. The AMAs have never really about who actually won. But just for the record, the wealth was split between Bieber, the Weeknd, Dan + Shay and Artist of the Year winner Taylor Swift, who each picked up three trophies apiece.<\/p>\n

Now let\u2019s get ready for some awards that really matter when the Grammy nominations are announced on Tuesday.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
