and energy companies.<\/p>\n<p> The FTSE 100<br \/>\n        UKX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210598409\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-0.06%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       which gained 0.6% last week and is now in positive territory since the 2016 vote to leave the European Union, edged up 0.1%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       U.S. stock futures<br \/>\n        ES00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209948968\/delayed\" class=\"positive\">+0.55%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       also were stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Gainers including British Airways owner International Airlines \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203048482\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.98%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       itself fell after reporting the vaccine it is making with the University of Oxford was up to 90% effective, depending on the dosing. The effectiveness fell to 62% if a full dose was followed a month later with a full dose.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately for AstraZeneca, markets have become accustomed to efficacy rates closer to 95% in the wake of the Pfizer<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+1.40%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Moderna<br \/>\n        MRNA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205619834\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+5.21%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       announcements. While the firm has understandably focused on the 90% efficacy rate seen when a half dose is followed by a full dose a month later, the significantly reduced sample size does provide less confidence in their findings,\u201d said Joshua Mahony, senior market analyst at IG.<\/p>\n<p>Other defensive stocks, including pharmaceutical GlaxoSmithKline<br \/>\n        GSK,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200381158\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.37%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and British American Tobacco<br \/>\n        BATS,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/209116881\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.83%<\/bg-quote><span>,<\/span><br \/>\n       fell, pressuring the broader index.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a report showed the U.K. economy under stress from the lockdown, which is scheduled to end in England on Dec. 2. The IHS Markit\/CIPS flash U.K. composite purchasing managers index fell to a 6-month low of 47.4 from 52.1 in October. Any reading below 50 indicates deteriorating conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Economists were heartened that the PMI didn\u2019t collapse in the same way it did in the spring. \u201cThe scale of the decline bears little resemblance to the plunge over the spring, when the composite PMI hit 13.4. Accordingly the latest figures do signal a decline in GDP [gross domestic product] in November.
