enough for...\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"wsj-article-caption article__inset__image__caption\" itemprop=\"caption\">\n<h4 class=\"wsj-article-caption-content\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_UK_has_ordered_40_million_vaccine_doses_from_Pfizer_and_BioNTech_%E2%80%93_enough_for_up_to_a_third_of_the_population\"><\/span>The U.K. has ordered 40 million vaccine doses from Pfizer and BioNTech \u2013 enough for up to a third of the population.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>      <span class=\"wsj-article-credit article__inset__image__caption__credit\" itemprop=\"creator\"><br \/>\n            justin tallis\/Agence France-Presse\/Getty Images<br \/>\n          <\/span><br \/>\n  <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>       The U.K.\u2019s medicines regulator said on Monday that a decision on whether to approve the Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus vaccine will be made in the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pfizerbiontech-covid-19-vaccine-mhra-statement-confirming-data-received\" class=\"icon none\">\u201cshortest time possible,\u201d<\/a> after receiving data on the drug. <\/p>\n<p> The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency said it will \u201crigorously assess these data and the evidence submitted on the vaccine\u2019s safety, quality and effectiveness.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"paywall\">\n       Before it grants approval, the MHRA says it will seek advice from the government\u2019s independent advisory body, the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/organisations\/commission-on-human-medicines\" class=\"icon none\">Commission on Human Medicines. <\/a><\/p>\n<p>Last week, the U.K. government formally asked the MHRA to assess the COVID-19 vaccine from drugmaker Pfizer<br \/>\n        PFE,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/202877789\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-0.75%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and its partner BioNTech<br \/>\n        BNTX,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/214419716\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.63%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       for its suitability, after the two companies applied for emergency-use authorization in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>The move came after data from the companies\u2019 Phase 3 trial showed the vaccine had an efficacy rate of 95% in people over 65 years. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration said it would meet on <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/news-events\/press-announcements\/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-announces-advisory-committee-meeting-discuss-covid-19-vaccine\" class=\"icon none\">Dec. 10<\/a> to discuss whether to authorize use the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>Read: <\/strong>Pfizer and BioNTech make it official: COVID-19 vaccine EUA submitted  <\/p>\n<p>The U.K. is expected to receive a total of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-welcomes-the-mhra-review-into-pfizer-and-biontech-vaccine\" class=\"icon none\">40 million doses<\/a> by the end of 2021, enough to vaccinate up to a third of the population, with the majority of doses anticipated in the first half of next year, the government said in a statement on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Globally, Pfizer has estimated it could have up to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pfizer.com\/news\/press-release\/press-release-detail\/pfizer-and-biontech-submit-emergency-use-authorization\" class=\"icon none\">50 million doses<\/a> of its vaccine candidate available by the end of 2020, and up to 1.3 billion doses by the end of 2021. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf approval is granted, the NHS [National Health Service] will be ready to deliver,\u201d said U.K. health secretary Matt Hancock.<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p>\u201cThe NHS has vast experience in delivering widespread vaccination programs and an enormous amount of work has taken place to ensure we have the logistical expertise, transport and workforce to roll out a vaccine according to clinical priority, at the speed at which it can be manufactured,\u201d Hancock added.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. government has purchased seven different types of vaccine in advance and procured 355 million doses. This includes 100 million doses of the vaccine being developed by drugmaker AstraZeneca<br \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/200304487\/composite\" class=\"negative\">-2.86%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and the University of Oxford.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, AstraZeneca<br \/>\n        AZN,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/203048482\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-3.60%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       and Oxford said that their COVID-19 vaccine candidate was found to be as much as 90% effective in preventing infections, according to data from a late-stage clinical trial in the U.K. and Brazil.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> AstraZeneca-Oxford COVID-19 vaccine can be up to 90% effective, late-stage trials show <\/p>\n<p>Interim analysis from the Phase 3 vaccine trial found that the experimental shot is\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.astrazeneca.com\/media-centre\/press-releases\/2020\/azd1222hlr.html\" class=\"icon none\">90% effective<\/a>\u00a0when administered as a half dose and then a full dose one month later, AstraZeneca and Oxford said. Effectiveness falls to 62% when two full doses are administered one month apart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read:<\/strong> Moderna signs supply deal with U.K. for COVID-19 vaccine <\/p>\n<p>The U.K. government has also acquired 5 million doses from biotech Moderna<br \/>\n        MRNA,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/205619834\/composite\" class=\"positive\">+2.42%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       for its vaccine candidate, which has also shown to be 95% effective in Phase 3 trials.
