\n Tulsa is bracing for the impact of a perfect political storm Saturday.<\/p>\n

President Trump, itching to get back on the campaign trail after 16 weeks away, is headed there for his first \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d rally since March 2 \u2014 as the coronavirus pandemic grinds on and anti-police protesters threaten to converge on Oklahoma\u2019s second-largest city.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to see 100,000 MAGA supporters down there, just wanting to see this country reopen,\u201d Trump campaign manager Brad Parscale promised Fox News<\/a> Friday. Tulsa has a population of 400,000.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy campaign hasn\u2019t started yet,\u201d Trump tweeted. \u201cIt starts on Saturday night in Oklahoma!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Trump team has touted more than a million ticket requests from supporters eager to leave COVID-19 shutdowns behind them. An outdoor stage will accommodate bands and speakers to entertain the overflow crowd for the scheduled 7 p.m. (EDT) rally \u2014 and perhaps a second speech from Trump an hour later.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019d love to let him know we\u2019re here for him. We want to show our support,\u201d said Robin Stites, who told The Oklahoman she\u2019d been waiting in line since Monday to snag a rally seat.<\/p>\n

Trump has taken a barrage of criticism since announcing his rally plans last week.<\/p>\n

The event was switched from June 19 to Saturday to avoid conflicting with Juneteenth, a celebration of the emancipation of slaves after the Civil War. But activists also decried Trump\u2019s selection of Tulsa \u2014 where a white mob destroyed a black neighborhood and massacred residents in 1921 \u2014 as an insensitive choice.<\/p>\n

Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum imposed a curfew Thursday after learning that \u201cindividuals from organized groups\u201d planned to spark mayhem outside the 19,000-seat Bank of Oklahoma Center.<\/p>\n

Bynum rescinded the order on Friday at the Secret Service\u2019s request.<\/p>\n

The potential spread of coronavirus at the rally has also provoked outcry. Local health officials pointed to an uptick in reported cases, with 352 new COVID-19 patients reported statewide on Friday and three deaths. A total of 367 Oklahomans have died of COVID-19 in a state that has seen fewer than 10,000 cases.<\/p>\n

Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt pooh-poohed those worries, saying that the state\u2019s new cases are merely the result of aggressive testing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s the 18-to-35 group that we\u2019ve seen a slight increase, but they\u2019re asymptomatic,\u201d Stitt told Trump at a White House meeting Thursday. \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a steady decline in the hospitalizations,\u201d down to 211 from a March peak of 560.<\/p>\n

Rallygoers will undergo a temperature check and will be given hand sanitizer and face masks \u2014 but won\u2019t be required to wear them, the Trump campaign has said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Democrats don\u2019t want to open,\u201d Trump told The Washington Times on Thursday. \u201cThey don\u2019t want me to have the rally.\u201d<\/p>\n

But, he said, the massive George Floyd protests around the nation justified holding an event of his own.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know, the protesters \u2014 there were thousands of them walking down Fifth Avenue,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
