\n Preet Bharara, former US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, pulled no punches on Twitter<\/a> late Friday night calling out Attorney General Bill Barr as a \u201cliar\u201d<\/p>\n

The tweet came after an accusation that Barr had intentionally tried to mislead people about the sudden \u201cresignation\u201d of US attorney Geoffrey Berman.<\/p>\n

The brouhaha began late Friday night after Barr announced in a press statement that Berman \u2014 Bharara\u2019s successor on the job \u2014 would be resigning from his position. The late-night bombshell raised eyebrows, especially as Berman had reportedly been investigating billions of dollars in loans made by Deutsche Bank to President Trump\u2019s company and that of son-in-law Jared Kushner in years past. Berman had also been investigating the finances of Trump\u2019s inaugural celebrations.<\/p>\n

Hours later, however, Berman put out a statement of his own contradicting Barr, saying he\u2019s not going anywhere.<\/p>\n

\u201cI learned in a press release from the Attorney General tonight that I was \u2018stepping down\u2019 as United States Attorney,\u201d Berman, said in a statement posted to the Southern District of New York Twitter account. \u201cI have not resigned, and have no intention of resigning, my position, to which I was app<\/a>ointed by the Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York,\u201d Berman\u2019s statement continued.<\/p>\n

Berman\u2019s refusal to leave sets up a showdown with the Justice Department over how and when he might ultimately be forced from the job.<\/p>\n

Peanut galleries online were also abuzz, with #FridayNightMassacre trending on social media into Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
