\n Angela Robinson has played devious Veronica Harrington on \u201cThe Haves and Have Nots\u201d for eight seasons \u2014 and says there\u2019s more to her alter-ego than meets the eye.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think Veronica is evil at all \u2014 I think she\u2019s ruthless,\u201d Robinson says. \u201cI think she\u2019s very upfront, very aggressive [and] she gets what she wants.She\u2019s a bad ass. Men get to be all that and they\u2019re rarely called evil. If there were more Veronicas in the world women would be running the world\u2026literally.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe just needs therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robinson, 57, originated the role of Veronica on the soapy drama about affluent (and battling) families living in Savannah, Ga. and Jacksonville, Fla. Created by Tyler Perry, \u201cThe Haves and Have Nots\u201d was the first original script<\/a>ed series<\/a> to premiere on OWN (in 2013). It kicks off its final season Tuesday at 8 p.m. on the cable network.<\/p>\n

Robinson says she injects parts of her personal life into her portrayal of the catty, snobbish Veronica, who seems to dislike just about everyone and everything she comes across.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do sometimes take my [real-life] anger and use that for Veronica,\u201d she says. \u201d I mean, I don\u2019t hold on to [the anger of] people cutting me off on the road, but it\u2019s just a mood of, \u2018I\u2019m not feeling anybody today\u2019 so I put that into Veronica \u2014 and don\u2019t take it out on anybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n

The homophobic Veronica, a millionaire, mother and ex-wife, has a particularly bad relationship with her gay son, Jeffrey, who\u2019s played by Gavin Houston. The show\u2019s large ensemble cast includes Tika Sumpter, John Schneider, Crystal Fox and Renee Lawless.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think there are a lot of people who, in real life, feel the way Veronica feels about her gay son,\u201d Robinson says. \u201cBut I hope people will just be who they are. I\u2019m not that way, so it makes me a little uncomfortable when people come up to me and say, \u2018I\u2019m with you on how Veronica treats Jeffrey.\u2019<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve definitely had that happen to me,\u201d she says. \u201cBut that\u2019s what drew me to Veronica: to be as truthful as I can and represent people as honestly as I can, because I do have many gay friends whose parents have that attitude. I just had to make a decision not to care if I was hated [by viewers] but to be more concerned with what I was really showing. That truthful [onscreen] homophobia and hate; it\u2019s really been a blessing in the gay community.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey have actually embraced me as well,\u201d she says. \u201cI thought, \u2018Oh my God they\u2019re going to hate me,\u2019 but instead they\u2019re like, \u2018That is my mom, that is my aunt.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

And, Robinson says, there\u2019s another side of Veronica that she\u2019s tried to show during all her years of playing the character.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think everybody can learn from Veronica,\u201d she says. \u201cShe\u2019s the victim of her \u2018flip side,\u2019 which I think every individual has, good qualities that can go bad if they\u2019re not managed. It\u2019s beautiful to be a perfectionist like Veronica, but not when you impose that on everybody around you.<\/p>\n

\u201cBeing controlling and smart is what got Veronica out of the projects, through law school and into building nursing homes so she could become a millionaire,\u201d she says, \u201cbut it\u2019s also what got her into the most trouble.\u201d<\/p>\n

Robinson tells fans to expect the final season of \u201cThe Haves and Have Nots\u201d to be an emotional rollercoaster.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou can expect more shootings and more fights and it will be shocking each week,\u201d she says. \u201cEvery season has its classic one-liner \u2014 and it won\u2019t be any different this season.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n
