Before you can see the benefit, though, you have to enable the feature and load a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> that takes advantage of the higher frame rate. Here\u2019s how to get 120 Hz working.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_120_Hz_Mode\"><\/span>What Is 120 Hz Mode?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Most displays update at 60 Hz, which means 60 screen refreshes every second. This is why frame rates were often c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ed at 60 frames per second on last-generation consoles. A display that supports 60 Hz, however, can only display a maximum of 60 frames per second.<\/p>\n<p>Since Microsoft\u2019s newest consoles pack a lot of power, they\u2019re able to render games at a much higher frame rate than even the Xbox One X. Some games support 120 Hz at lower resolutions, like 1440p. Regardless of which console you have or which resolution you use, your display must support up to 120 Hz for this to work.<\/p>\n<p>Thankfully, both the Series X and S feature a handy display calibration tool that tells you exactly what your TV is capable of. Once it\u2019s set up correctly, your console will stay locked at 120 Hz and you\u2019ll be able to take advantage of higher-frame-rate games where supported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RELATED:<\/strong> <strong><em>How to Buy a TV for Gaming in 2020<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Check_for_120_Hz_Support_and_Enable_It\"><\/span>Check for 120 Hz Support and Enable It<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>With your Xbox console turned on, press the Xbox button on your controller, and then use the bumper buttons (LB and RB) to tab across to the \u201cProfile &amp; System\u201d tab. Scroll down and select \u201cSettings,\u201d and then, under \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>,\u201d select \u201cTV &amp; Display Options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the menu that appears, select \u201c4K TV Details\u201d to see a list of modes your TV supports. You\u2019re hoping to see ticks next to any descriptions of 120 Hz modes, like \u201c4K UHD (120 Hz)\u201d or \u201cNative 4K at 120 FPS\u201d (on Series X, at least.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-700995 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxbox_display_details.jpg.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.lKgnRGuZXN.jpg\" alt=\"The &quot;TV Resolution&quot; and &quot;Playing Games&quot; sections in the &quot;4K TV Display&quot; menu on Xbox.\" width=\"650\" height=\"239\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If the Xbox says your TV supports the higher refresh rate, you can now enable 120 Hz. Back out of the \u201c4K TV Details\u201d menu, and then select \u201cRefresh Rate\u201d from the drop-down menu. Select \u201c120 Hz,\u201d and then wait for your display to refresh. If you see the Xbox user interface, everything worked<\/p>\n<p>If you see a black screen instead, your TV unfortunately isn\u2019t supported. If you wait a second, it will default to 60 Hz.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-700996 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xxbox_series_120hz.jpg.pagespeed.gp+jp+jw+pj+ws+js+rj+rp+rw+ri+cp+md.ic.ytcZXYUHMb.jpg\" alt=\"Select &quot;120 Hz&quot; in the &quot;General TV &amp; Display Options&quot; menu.\" width=\"650\" height=\"409\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>While you\u2019re in this menu, you might want to try enabling 10-bit color, too. Select \u201cVideo Fidelity &amp; Overscan,\u201d and then open the \u201cColor Depth\u201d drop-down menu. Select \u201c30 Bits per Pixel (10-Bit),\u201d and then wait.<\/p>\n<p>If your TV displays the Xbox user interface, this worked and you can exit the menu. If you get a black screen, just wait and Xbox will revert to 8-bit color.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-700997 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/xbox_series_10-bit.jpg\" alt=\"Select &quot;Color Depth&quot; in the &quot;Video Fidelity &amp; Overscan&quot; menu. \" width=\"650\" height=\"305\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"admonishment_warning\"><p><strong>Warning:<\/strong> While 12-bit color might seem like the better option, the Xbox only supports a maximum of 4K at 120 Hz in 10-bit color with full RGB (4:4:4). If you choose 12-bit, it introduces chroma subsampling, which results in decreased picture quality (and more visible color banding).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Playing_Games_That_Support_120_Frames_per_Second\"><\/span>Playing Games That Support 120 Frames per Second<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Simply choosing 120 Hz mode in the Xbox settings isn\u2019t enough to really see the benefits in-game. For that, you have to play a game that supports output of up to 120 frames per second.\u00a0You might also need to enable the 120 FPS \u201cPerformance\u201d or \u201cHigh Frame Rate\u201d option in a game\u2019s settings, as many titles now allow you to choose between quality and performance.<\/p>\n<p>Some AAA games that support frame rates up to 120 FPS include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Dirt 5<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Destiny 2<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Gears 5<\/em> (multiplayer only)<\/li>\n<li><em>Rainbow Six Siege<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The following indie games also support 120 FPS:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Ori and the Will of the Wisps<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Touryst<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>The Falconeer<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Xbox Series X Indie Showcase: The Falconeer + The Touryst Push High-End Display Features\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Tn5AeMY6mq0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>You can switch between 120 and 60 Hz modes any time in the \u201cTV &amp; Display Options\u201d menu in the Xbox settings. Then, you can compare and contrast both modes to see if those extra frames really make much of a difference. A game running at 120 Hz should feel smoother and more responsive, but some people don\u2019t notice much difference.<\/p>\n<p>The difference is nowhere near as obvious as it is when you switch from 30 to 60 FPS. However, most gamers will be pleased to see higher frame rates becoming the norm, along with other next-gen benefits, like powerful CPUs, unrivaled graphical power, and lightning-fast SSDs.<\/p>\n<p>Unsure whether the Xbox Series S or X is for you?
